A New Era is Now

When you hear the word Era in relation to the WWE, a multitude of things come to mind. The Attitude Era probably being at the top of the list, even if you weren’t a wrestling fan at that time this all went down like myself. The PG Era is another. Now of course this is just my personal opinion, but I break the timeline for wrestling down like this. From 1985 to about 1992 I consider that the Character Era. From 1992 to 1998 I would consider that the Worker Era. From 1998 to 2001 I consider that the Attitude Era. From 2001 to 2005 I would call this the Transitional Era. From 2005 to 2012 I consider that the PG Era. From 2012 to now in 2014, I consider that another Transitional Era.

I can, and very well might, make another editorial breaking down each of the eras and why I consider them that or labeled them that. That’s not why I did this though. For the last week or so I’ve seen a lot of different editorials/blogs/articles from some really good writers. The focus has been the death of the Ultimate Warrior, to Sting coming to the WWE, to Wrestlemania 30, to The Undertaker losing. This isn’t about any of those…wait…let me take that back. This sort of is. I said the latest “Transitional Era” happened until now in 2014. I feel as though that era ended at Wrestlemania 30. Look at what all occurred at last Sundays PPV. Cesaro won the battle royal, The Shield dominated, Daniel Bryan won the championship, and most of all, The Undertaker lost. I genuinely feel like with Taker losing, it signifies the end of one thing, and the start of something new. I consider this to be the start of the Wrestling Era.

You might wonder why I call it that. I mean, technically what we watch each and every week is wrestling. Think back in the past number of years though. There have definitely been some major matches that were 5 star classics, but there was also a focus on the characters, the comedy, and such. I’m not saying the WWE will never have that characters or comedy, because quite frankly, it’s one of the ways they cater to kids. The WWE right now though is at a prime point. New talents are slowly beginning to debut. Soon we’ll see Bo Dallas and Adam Rose. Paige finally made her debut on Raw. We’ve seen the rise in talents like Cesaro, Bryan, The Shield, and the Wyatt Family. Tell me the last time you’ve seen a bad Daniel Bryan match, or a bad Cesaro match. Going back over a year, you might pick out one or two, but then compare it to someone like Randy Orton, or Alberto Del Rio, or John Cena.

For anyone who has watched NXT, you know there is a treasure trove of true talent down there. Sure, there might be some duds, but there are more greats than not so greats. It use to be when someone from OVW/FCW/NXT was called up, either they’d excel(Shelton Benjamin) or they’d flounder. Sometimes it would be due to WWE creative sticking them with a horrible gimmick/storyline, and other times it’s because they didn’t connect with the fans. Now, we see talent come up and BOOM! The second that wrestler(s) hits the ring and is on Raw or SD, the fans are excited, the fans are cheering or booing for them. There is going to come a time where John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, and Brock Lesnar are no longer the go to guys.

There is no way to predict the future. I could sit here and try and tell you that this era I’ve dubbed the Wrestling Era will last for the next 5 years, the next 7 years, or the next 10 years. There is no way for you or I to know that though. I think one thing is for certain though. While there will always be a place in the hearts of fans for people like The Undertaker, Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold, or The Rock, we are facing a new horizon where not just one, but multiple wrestlers are becoming the focus. Like I said, I can’t predict the future, but from where I’m sitting, it definitely looks bright.
