Battleground 2016 Predictions

TRENDING

A quick random note, I’m a huge fan of the flag match card design WWE decided to went with for this year. Anyone else like it?

So, Battleground is tonight, and it’s taken a month to get to a placeholder PPV, believe it or not. This is going to be the first time since 2011 where there will be inter-brand fights as well, so that’s certainly something. I haven’t been here in a week, and I almost forgot about this, (which reminds me that I’ll have my thoughts on the draft soon as well), so with that said, here’s my quick match-by-match predictions.

The Miz (C) w/Maryse vs. Darren Young w/Bob Backlund – Intercontinental Championship

This feud was being built up by a series of 1 minute segments with Young and Backlund talking about random things to improve Darren’s life and that somehow translated into Young getting Backlund’s finisher. Modern day reference aside, the outcome of this match can be seen from a mile away. Young will not be winning the Intercontinental Title, or any title for that matter, any time soon. He made The Miz tap out in a tag match on Smackdown, the tell-tale sign of who is going to win this Sunday. The Miz has been busy making movies and hasn’t really gotten into the feud with Young as of yet. The outcome really isn’t in question here for me. Moving on. The Miz will keep the IC Title on Smackdown and hopefully will move on to bigger and better things.

Winner: The Miz

Becky Lynch vs. Natayla

So, Natayla attacks Becky after Money In The Bank, so naturally these two chicks ahte each other. Both women are on Smackdown, so it might be safe to say that this isn’t the last time these two see each other. If this match gets the time, it could be good, but with another women’s match and other important matches, I might be pushing my luck. Natayla really has nothing to gain at this point in her career if she’s not fighting for the title, and my senses tell me that the Lass Kicker gets the victory here, if for no other reason that Natayla simply doesn’t need it and it wouldn’t advance her career. I mean, Becky is in some sort of purgatory herself, but her ceiling is much higher at this point.

Winner: Becky Lynch

Rusev (C) w/Lana vs. Zack Ryder – United States Championship

Not only would I consider it a massive upset if Ryder were to win, I’d consider it a bigger one if this match lasted longer than 4 minutes. Not much analysis needed here. Ryder isn’t stopping Rusev, and the US Title isn’t going on Smackdown. Moving on.

Winner: Rusev

John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs. The Club (AJ Styles, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows)

Didn’t really see the point of splitting up The Club, but whatever. It’s sort of obvious that AJ and Cena are set for another one on one bout at Summerslam, this being the rubber match. I really haven’t been following these six a lot, but AJ did pin Enzo in a twelve man tag on Monday, while Cean beat Gallows on Smackdown. This is really a toss-up for me, because seeing as how this is a tag match, it wouldn’t really give Cena or AJ huge momentum, but I suspect that one or the other will be involved in the decision. his is the last match that the Club will have together for the time being, so it might make more sense to give the Club the victory here. I don’t say this with a lot of confidence, but I’ll go with The Club here, just because they are going to be separated until next year. Cena gets his redemption at Summerslam.

Winners: The Club

The New Day vs. The Wyatt Family

So it was painfully obvious that some of this feud was derived from TNA’s Final Deletion Bit, and it was a big belly flop. To top it off, this match isn’t for the tag titles, so there really isn’t much intrigue to who wins. The new Day will be brought as a trio to RAW, while Braun Strowman goes solo on RAW for what I can only believe will be a failed singles run. The Wyatt Family are sort of in the same boat that The Club is in, This is another toss up for me, and I don’t honestly care who wins this match because nothing is gained. The New Day will still be tag champs win or lose and The Wyatt Family is now split up. I’ll go with The New Day carrying momentum as the tag champs on RAW. The Wyatt Family really is in some sort of funk, well the trio formerly known as The Wyatt Family anyways.

Winner: The New Day

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

This is the last time they’ll fight. I promise. Well, I take that back. When I found out these two were both drafted on RAW, a part of me was excited, because no matter how many times they fight against each other, they tear the house down, but another part of me was very disappointed, because I feel like they cannot grow if they don’t move on from each other. It feels like these two have been like a couple of hamsters on a wheel since WrestleMania. They just haven’t been able to move on to the next level because they are still infatuated with each other. Now that they’re drafted on the same show, I can only hope they don’t cross paths in the hallway any time soon, because they both need to ascend, and they can’t when they go against each other. Zayn pinned Owens on RAW a couple of weeks back, so I’m inclined to believe Owens, but Owens has beaten Sami one on one at Payback, so I hesitate at thinking Owens would beat Sami twice in a row straight up. Yet another coin toss, but I think we may see some indecisive finish that will lead to ANOTHER match between them at Summerslam. If we get a straight up finish, I’ll say that it’s KO who gets the victory, but do not be surprised if there is some sort of screwy finish to continue this feud into Summerslam. But right now, I’ll go 55/45 that it’s Kevin Owens.

Winner: Kevin Owens

Sasha Banks and TBD vs. Charlotte and Dana Brooks

Sasha Banks stated on her Twitter that her partner would be someone that not even Dave Meltzer would guess. No, the obvious favorite would be Bayley, seeing as how she was not called up, but Sasha has denied that Bayley will be the mystery partner, and in recent moments in WWE, when there’s a mystery challenger, we tend to get disappointed. Could Trish Stratus return for a one match deal as she has expressed mild interest in a return? I think the most likely scenario would be Nia Jax, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an outside surprise, even if it is Bayley. However, I won’t hold my breath. Sasha vs. Charlotte is all but confirmed for Summerslam, and Charlotte pinned Sasha on Smackdown, so I suspect that she won’t lose twice in a row, so whoever Sasha chooses, she and Sasha will be winning tonight.

Winners: Sasha Banks and Mystery Partner

Dean Ambrose (C) vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns – WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The Shield triple threat match that people were wanting for WrestleMania for some time now is instead the main event of a placeholder PPV. Disappointing as that may be, I am still pumped for this match. Seth Rollins has defeated Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose with the WWE Title on the line, but Orton was involved in the decision at Payback last year. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose have done a commendable job in carrying this triple threat feud with Roman’s wellness policy taking him out of commission for the past 30 days. Dean has beaten Seth with the title on the line twice, so I suspect Seth won’t be taking any pinfall defeats tonight. This is one of those rare cases where the champion retaining would be an upset. Dean Ambrose is on Smackdown, and while he was that brand’s first overall pick, I don’t suspect that Vince wants the WWE’s premier title on WWE’s clear second tier show. There’s always a chance that Roman wins because, well, he’s Roman Reigns, but his wellness policy violation has clearly done some damage to him and Vince was pissed off at it, so I’m thinking that it’s going to be some time before Roman gets back the title, which leaves only one trust worthy person to win tonight, and that’s Seth Rollins. Seth has been beaten by Ambrose and he beat Roman Reigns cleanly at Money In The Bank. I’m thinking WWE is progressing towards Rollins and Reigns for the title on, and I’m thinking WWE needs the WWE Title on RAW and will probably introduce a secondary world title on Smackdown and maybe have some tournament for it or something. With that said, Rollins is a trustworthy champion, and if there’s going to be any winner tonight, I have to believe that it’s going to be him. Anyone else would be a legit upset, which has happened before. But I don’t think tonight.

Winner: Seth Rollins

Of course, I’ll have my review and match ratings after the show tonight. In addition, I’ll give my thoughts on the draft and another piece of personal preference regarding me. Until tonight guys.
