My Thoughts On Extreme Rules 2016.

I was surprisingly entertained by this PPV. Years ago I came to accept that “Extreme Rules” is certainly not as described on the tin, so when I know there’s likely to be no blood, or any seriously risky spots to look forward too, I end up setting the bar as low as possible. Most PPVs of the last few years have felt like glorified Raws; especially since it changed to 3 hours. When you accept that, and the fact Extreme Rules is a throwaway PPV, I’m sure many can see past the minor flaws. Every match delivered something. Whether the results went the right way is a matter of opinion, but the most important thing to consider is every match meant something in the grand scheme of things.

Corbin continues to dominate and is moving on from Ziggler soon. Anderson & Gallows gained momentum, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they challenge New Day soon. Rusev is back where he was a couple of years ago, exactly where he should have stayed before his downward spiral and subsequent League Of Nations adventure. Kallisto will likely return to the tag team division with Sin Cara, which is the best thing really. The Vaudevillains had their most important match to date, despite losing out. Xavier Woods was exceptional in the ending, and to me it feels like he’s becoming the leader of the group. The IC title match was pretty sweet, and a definite reason to watch Extreme Rules, but I really wanted Cesaro to win. They are building Miz once again so he can put someone over, so the booking didn’t surprise unfortunately.

As for the Asylum match, it made sense from a story standpoint. WWE is trying to make Ambrose a more rounded character, so to introduce his own talk show and match type is a good idea on their end. But the first thing I thought of was TNA’s Lethal Lockdown, except the roof doesn’t lower with weapons after a certain time. Forgive me, but it felt like a cheap rip. At the same time I know Ambrose fought in many crazy matches in CZW so the “Asylum” theme made sense to me. Also I wanted to doubt him being victorious, but Jericho never got going so it was predictable in the end. Instead of brutality, it was like a comedy show. Great if you enjoy a good laugh .. but some would assume an Asylum match be hardcore and unforgiving. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the match, and it had good moments like Ambrose’s leap off the top, Jericho bleeding from the tacks, and the perfect selling from Jericho at the end .. but it needed another level of intensity. At least Ambrose got a PPV victory out of it.

As for Nattie vs. Charlotte, they always deliver quality wrestling. I’m not sure how, but Natalya has managed to lose more title matches than anyone else. I wanted her to come out on top just for a change of pace, but it was obvious the Flair’s would find some way of cheating; it’s what they do. I was surprised to see Dana Brooke getting pushed into the spotlight so soon after moving up from NXT. They are doing a great job building Charlotte’s heat at the moment .. and while some say she’s starting to look “weak”, it’s because they’ve reeled you in. The longer the heat surrounding her championship reign continues to grow, the bigger the moment will be when someone beats her. It will be a big deal because they built her up to that moment, and that’s what we need; a champion who needs knocking off her perch.

As for the main event, I knew AJ wasn’t going home with the title. To have to wait pains me, but I will continue to wait patiently til WWE decides to put the strap on him. As expected, the crowd gave Reigns a hard time, but I enjoyed his work here. Yes, AJ was leading, but it takes two to tango and they both did the job. I think Reigns prefers working smaller guys, there’s something about him and guys like Bryan and AJ which ends up producing decent main events. The ending was cool, and I’m sure many were eagerly awaiting Rollins’ return. With other big names returning, the future’s looking bright with a healthier main event scene, and a decked mid-card filled with talent jockeying for position. In closing, I would like to thank Cody Rhodes for putting his life, heart, and soul into everything he did for the WWE fans. Thanks for reading everyone.
