1990 was a year of transition for the WWE. Gone were the years of “the Rock  ‘n’  Wrestling connection, and the mainstream attention from MTV. The WWE were looking for that next big star to bring that attention back. As well as replacements for Hulk Hogan, who was looking to retire in a couple of years. 1990 also saw a full remake of the tag team roster that had been stagnant for the past 2 years. Historically however, 1990 will be remembered for the birth of a phenom.

The WWF started the year with Hulk Hogan as the champ. Hogan was acting more, and had already given WWE notice that he was looking to retire soon. The WWE gave The Ultimate Warrior a shot to carry the ball. Wrestlemania was built solely around the Ultimate Challenge. The WWE planned and promoted this feud perfectly, and the first ever face vs. face Mania main event
