Tag Team Money in the Bank: Good or Bad Idea?

Capping off this three part series of alternate Money in the Bank ladder match additions is our last championship to conquer: the tag team division. Both the women’s (part 1) and the midcard (part 2) have aspects to them that haven’t been done before, and this would follow suit as well, since there has never been a Money in the Bank that has implications for anything other than the one solitary man that wins it and the champion he eventually cashes in on.

There have been tag team ladder matches for the championships themselves, as well as TLC matches (which are the exact same thing with a different name, but that’s an argument for another day) but never one that resulted in the guaranteed title shot that Money in the Bank brings with it. What are the pros and cons?

* NOTE: All of the following is taken into account without factoring in the upcoming brand split. We don’t know exactly what WWE is planning with that and how it could affect things going forward, but we know the rosters won’t divide until after this year’s Money in the Bank has been decided.

Positives

The tag team division doesn’t get as much love as it should. It’s crazy, but as much of a staple as tag team matches are for Raw and SmackDown, WWE’s philosophy has always leaned more towards using them as a setup for singles feuds rather than their own separate fun.

Right now, though, there is a decent harmony on the roster with the amount of teams that are worth investing into and some that are playing the part of jobbers. The New Day are on top of the mountain with The Usos, The Club, Enzo and Big Cass, The Dudley Boyz and The Vaudevillains all hanging around them. There’s also The Lucha Dragons, The Shining Stars, The Golden Truth, Breezango, The Social Outcasts and The Wyatt Family who could fill out the match, take some spills, and so on.

With that list, you can see that there are plenty of people to make sure this match was the fun sort of chaos it entails, especially with the dynamic that it isn’t every man for himself. One guy can be climbing the ladder while his partner stands guard to fight off anyone who wants to toss him off, or perhaps there can even be a Freebird Rule scenario where a third man claims that he has a valid opportunity to enter the match with his teammates, making the odds unfair for them.

Also, with the cash-in, would both team members have to agree on a particular time to call for the title shot, or could one of them act as a representative for both? There’s potential to cause some tension with the briefcase as one person wants to cash in and the other doesn’t. Do you blame your partner if he cashes in against your will and you lose? Maybe that leads to the split of the same team that seemed like the next guaranteed champions just moments beforehand!

Negatives

While I said before that this could be a fun madhouse of a match, it could also be a clusterfuck. Ten wrestlers in a Money in the Bank match before felt like too much, and that would mean a maximum of five teams could compete with four being a less risky option. Having only four possible winners, though, cuts down on part of the excitement of the build as there are less ways for the match to end.

If you do a tag team Money in the Bank match, you also seem to be skipping over the women and the midcard, and there’s definitely no room on a pay-per-view to do four ladder matches like this and not have it be overkill.

On top of all this, the value WWE assigns to the division gets in the way. As mentioned before, there are lulls where the roster has almost no viable teams and the championship seems to just linger in darkness until a few more exciting pairings come along. When that inevitably happens again, this ladder match would be awful and just shine a spotlight on something that has a lot of problems.

Judgment Call

Since I called for a silver midcard briefcase, you would think I’d be propositioning a bronze briefcase for the tag team division, but I would have to vote against it. Realistically, having a world title defense, a women’s title defense, and a world title Money in the Bank ladder match doesn’t leave a lot of room for much else, and while I could stretch a justification for a midcard ladder match, a tag team one would cram too much into one show.

Sometimes, less is more, and this is a scenario where I can see that applying. The division definitely shouldn’t be as overlooked as often as it is, but that doesn’t mean it should get in the way of the balance that keeps everything else in order. There’s some value to this idea, and if WWE tried it out once to see what would happen and it failed, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, however I think it sounds better in theory than in execution or even on paper.

Would you like to see a Money in the Bank dedicated to the Tag Team Championship at some point down the line? Who would be your choice to win this year if it were to happen? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
