The Future of TNA: I’m Breathing Easy

Wow. What can really be said right now in regards to TNA? Sadly, there are many people, even here, who are happy to hear that the demise that they’ve been predicting for seven or more years, could finally be upon us. Of course, that’s if we are to believe Dave Meltzer’s reporting. Anyone who knows me, from the discussion threads and comment sections of that articles here on EWN, knows that I don’t believe a word he says unless it’s been substantiated by a real source or a legitimate news outlet. But as it stand now, it’s the hot topic as we rapidly approach a currently scheduled Bound For Glory PPV. So what is the deal with TNA? Is WWE a potential buyer? Sinclair Broadcasting? Billy Corgan? Let’s look at these three as they are speculated to be the top suitors to purchase TNA.

Sinclair Broadcasting. I’m going to count them out right now. I don’t watch ROH. My allotted time that I’ve budgeted for wrestling doesn’t allow for me to bother with it. But what I do know of them through reading about them and seeing how they operate, Sinclair is not investing money into ROH. ROH is a side cash deal with little risk for them. The moment it starts to lose money for them, is the moment ROH will no longer exist. I have my doubts that Sinclair is a serious buyer. Sure, they’d like to have that library for their US version of the Fight Network, but they’re not going to put out money on any significant level. So scratch them.

WWE. While I think WWE would love to have the TNA library for their Network, and they love the ego boost that comes with crushing the competition, I don’t think they’re very serious about it. Just look at the reports over the last couple of weeks. First, they may buy it or may be interested. Then, HHH is interested in signing Matt Hardy when his contract is up. Now, WWE is a serious potential buyer that Dixie Carter has been having discussions with for the past week. Read that cluster muck of a timeline again. Of course, this is all Meltzer reporting, in case you wonder why I never believe him. But let’s look at the latter two. HHH wants to sign Matt Hardy once his contract is up with TNA. Then WWE is a serious bidder for TNA. Clearly, someone wasn’t paying attention, unless Meltzer just thinks wrestling fans are stupid asses. WWE didn’t decide last Saturday afternoon, “Oh hey, maybe we’ll buy TNA”. It doesn’t work that way. It takes planning. It takes structuring of money and weighing the pros and cons of the cost. It takes negotiations. And it takes research into legal loopholes that could be presented. That doesn’t get resolved in 4 days. That takes weeks or months. And there’s no way HHH wouldn’t have known about this potential acquisition. So which is it, Meltzer? Is WWE trying to buy TNA? Or does HHH want to sign Hardy AFTER his TNA contract expires?

Billy Corgan. I’ve been saying this for about three days now and it was very close to being confirmed today. The arrangement is already made for Corgan to acquire controlling interest in TNA. I’ve said it’s already a done deal and he’s keeping quiet until they work their way through a few pieces of red tape. They could be negotiating some salary payments for a few wrestlers. Tigre Uno was re-signed back in the early spring and hasn’t been seen. James Storm has been absent and recently tweeted that he’s a free agent again. Maybe Billy Corgan is completely rebranding and is finalizing those details. And BTW, have you noticed how much attention TNA is getting right now? I don’t think I’ve counted the amount of articles about TNA online in the last few days, than I would have in a typical month.

I know I’ve said a lot of “maybes” here. So I’ll go with a little more information that comes off as more concrete to me.

1. Everything seems to be business as usual in the public eye. Dixie is tweeting about BFG. Broken Matt Hardy and Rosemary are continuing their feud. The TNA wrestling Twitter feed continues to reveal names for the Bound for Gold Gauntlet. Typically in this situation, wouldn’t Dixie Carter being teasing one of her famous “Big Announcements”?

2. Corgan is all over the place. He was on ESPN. He was just on Busted Open Radio today and he talked about some of those “legal reasons” why he can’t reveal too much information about his current role in acquiring controlling interest. He also revealed that he met with the President and new VP of Programming at POP TV while he was in LA. They discussed the partnership with him in charge of TNA and POP gave him their full support.

3. Probably the most concrete evidence of all. Seeing is Believing. I’m not imagining it. TNA recently did just sign Moose, Damien Sandow, Brandi Rhodes, and Cody. It’s real. It happened. Moves that are typically not done by a company who’s future is in question.

Now, I realize that it’s difficult for some people to understand that business transactions actually take time. WWE doesn’t wake up one morning and purchase TNA as if they’re going to the corner store to buy a gallon of milk. I get that some people truly believe that’s how it works and I must be the bearer of bad news…it doesn’t work that way. Sandow wouldn’t have signed with TNA if the future was in doubt. Moose wouldn’t have signed if there was even a question that TNA might not last the year. Cody and Brandi Rhodes wouldn’t have signed a week ago, if Bound For Glory was in danger of not taking place. It’s just not logical

Of course, I run the risk of having to come here and eat my words, which I always do if I’m wrong. I always own it when I’m wrong. So for me to say all of these things, means I’m confident that I’ll be enjoying Bound For Glory, Live on PPV, this Sunday at 8pm. I am looking forward to a great night of wrestling. I can’t wait to see what Cody will do. And The Great War is upon us. I’m going to enjoy Bound For Glory. It’s going to be an awesome night.

Thanks for reading everyone. Be Safe.
