Since the buyout of WCW in 2001 the WWE has been virtually uncontested in the world of professional wrestling. While other promotions like TNA, ROH trying to make a bigger name, WWE is also lacking without any competition. WWE can’t wait for TNA or ROH to make a bigger name to have that competition and actually they don’t have to. WWE is having the much required competition itself.
They just have to play the cards right. There was a time when Raw and Smackdown both were having equal limelight and attraction but in recent years WWE has totally focused on Raw and left Smackdown with less creative writing and mid card guys. WWE is having enough wrestlers to lead both shows with their own storyline. WWE will remain to be Monday Night Show and Smackdown as it is Friday Night Show.
In the past I used to like the draft episode where wrestlers were drafted to either Raw or Smackdown, I miss Raw vs Smackdown things, there as so many things which can be done if they give both the shows equal focus

Title vs Title Match: WWE Champion vs World Heavy Weight Champion, Intercontinental Vs United States Champion, Raw Tag Team Champion vs Smackdown Champion
They can have Invasion like storyline
We all know Authority Storyline will lead to Vince vs Triple H
They can do that better with Raw vs Smackdown thing, Vince will manage Smackdown & Triple H will manage Smackdown, where Smackdown can invade Raw and lead to Vince vs Triple H
Right now most of the Rosters are just unutilised or underutilised
Having 2 shows with equal focus will help these rosters also
