The Daily Wrestling Podcast – Roman Reigns – The Right Choice? EP16

In probably the most heated episode to date Aatif Nawaz and Armaan Kirmani ferociously discuss and review Royal Rumble 2015 and consider why Roman Reigns is the right person to lead the WWE into it’s new era. Aatif suggests that Roman Reigns is undercooked and not yet ready whereas Armaan thinks that it is the right time to take a risk and create a New Star who has demonstrated a lot of potential over the last few months.

“As John Cena has proven, you do not need to be the company’s best worker to draw money and arguably Roman Reigns has a lot more in ring potential than John Cena. Where were all these critics of Roman when he was a member of the Shield?” – Armaan Kirmani

Both Aatif and Armaan agree that the manner in which Daniel Bryan was eliminated was poor booking and consequently deflated the rest of the Rumble Match and contributed to the fan disappointment that followed. Aatif considers this to be a mistake that the WWE have to rectify before Wrestlemania 31 otherwise they run the risk of fans booing the entirety of the main event between Brock and Reigns.

Armaan is less sceptical. He thinks that a divided opinion will only benefit Roman Reigns’ drawing capabilities.

He suggests, the WWE now has to work the crowd and the hardcore fans and can’t let them dictate story lines and programming on a week by week or month by month basis. Daniel Bryan had his moment at Wrestlemania 30 where all the top heels, inc. HHH jobbed to him – but this is not his year and fans need to deal with it. Running campaigns to cancel WWE network or boo up and coming performers because Daniel Bryan didn’t get a good spot during his elimination is a very petty argument and is a feeble attempt at trying to hijack the WWE creative booking which itself is quite weak.

If the fans wanted Daniel Bryan in the final 2 or 4 – arguably the booing would have been worse if Bryan was eliminated by Reigns so the argument to have Bryan in the final 4 is flawed.

Daniel Bryan will likely main event plenty of Wrestlemania’s in the future and is a draw regardless of the WWE championship. Perhaps it really is best for business for the WWE to build towards Wrestlemania 32 at Dallas by taking a risk on Reigns and hoping that like the other Shield members he is able to demonstrate better in ring and promo abilities and ultimately steal the show at Wrestlemania 31. Clearly a lot of things have to fall into place for Reigns – but this is his opportunity and there is no reason why the fans should turn on him without allowing him a fair chance.

If his face to face confrontation with Brock Lesnar on Raw is anything to go by the night after the Rumble, he is already showing signs of improvement and taking on the challenge head on. This is how a star is born – by overcoming the odds and winning over the respect of the ‘Universe’.
