WWE Live Event – Manchester – 8th November 2014

So, just yesterday night I took the plunge and attended my first WWE Live Event, and despite the amount of matches, and the awesome Manchester crowd, I wouldn’t go again.

Some Notes

So, something that was really cool was where I was sat, I was basically adjacent to the stage, but this meant that I was sat next to the production table. This produced some of the best moments of the night for me, seeing Prince Devitt working at the table, as well as appearances from Adrian Neville, Zak Knight (Paige’s brother and fantastic wrestler), Arn Anderson and Bill DeMott! (There was also some old guy in funky trousers with long grey hair but I couldn’t figure that one out).

There were no visibly empty seats, the upper section at the very back of the arena was tarped off and obviously behind the stage was also tarped off but everywhere else was pretty much capacity. This made for a very entertaining wait from when doors opened to the show starting, many spontaneous ‘YES!’ chants, lots of ‘WOO!’s, and Mexican waves made the wait very entertaining.

The Show

The show began with Byron Saxton welcoming us all to WWE Live and then kicked right into the action.

Match 1 – The Miz (With Damien Mizdow) vs. Sheamus

The Miz began by cutting a promo outlining how he hates the UK but especially Manchester, when he was interrupted by the Celtic Warrior. What followed was a very standard match which set the standard for the night really. The Miz eats a Brogue Kick after an attempted distraction by Sandow.

Winner – Sheamus

(Sandow is one of the most entertaining guys on the WWE roster might I add, his imitaition of The Miz went right from his entrance to them leaving back through the curtain, fantastic stuff.)

Match 2 – Mark Henry vs Xavier Woods

Total squash, Mark Henry cuts a promo before the match telling Woods to leave, he refused and was hit with 2 World’s Strongest Slams.

Winner – Mark Henry

The video of Vince McMahon apologising about the delay of the WWE Network showed here and got major heat from the crowd.

Match 3 – Heath Slater, Titus O’Neil & Hornswoggle vs Los Matadores & El Torito

Okay match in general, comic relief for the kids with ‘Swoggle and Torito but when it came down to the other four guys in the match, it was okay. Slater is damn good too. There was one point in the match where one of the Matadores hit a vaulting senton over the ropes on Titus, and didn’t even hit him at all, the crowd was pretty much silent after this. El Torito hits Hornswoggle with a springboard moonsault for the 1-2-3.

Winners – Los Matadores & El Torito

Seth Rollins video played, basically saying he didn’t sell out and he was going to beat John Cena in the main event street fight.

Match 4 – Brie Bella & AJ Lee vs Paige & Nikki Bella

Before the match, Nikki refuses to allow Brie to compete.

Match 4 – Handicap Match –  AJ Lee vs Paige & Nikki Bella

God awful. Nikki Bella took control of the action and didn’t tag Paige in at all. The crowd hated this, many ‘We Want Paige’ chants but they didn’t take any effect, AJ Lee with the roll up on Nikki after distraction from Brie.

Winner – AJ Lee

Match 5 – US Championsip Match – Rusev (c) (with Lana) vs Big Show

Slow, boring, uninspiring match, nothing more to say. Rusev hits Big Show with a chair.

Winner by DQ – Big Show

After the match, Mark Henry came down to the ring and attacked Big Show but Big Show fought back and hit Henry with the KO Punch.

At this point, Byron Saxton entered the ring and threw some t-shirts into the corwd and announced the interval.

After an introduction from Saxton, were right back into it!

Match 6 – Jack Swagger (with Zeb Colter) vs Damien Mizdow

Above average match from these two, which I didn’t expect, I was pleasantly surprised! The finish came when Mizdow went for the Skull Crushing Finale but Swagger rolled through and locked him in the Patriot Lock.

Winner – Jack Swagger

After the match, Colter cut a promo saying that he loves the UK and we should vote people out of Parliament if we don’t like their policies, Colter accidentally slipped up and said ‘bastard’, after that the promo fell apart until he did his ‘We The People’ stuff.

Match 7 – Big E & Kofi Kingston vs Luke Harper & Erick Rowan

Fantastic match, exactly what this crowd needed after some of the disappointing matches we had seen tonight. This absolutely livened the crowd right back up. Kingston got the pin on Rowan when they hit their double-team finish.

Winners – Big E & Kofi Kingston

Match 8 – Main Event Manchester Street Fight – John Cena vs Seth Rollins

Very, very good match, although lots of the spots in the match had already been seen before, the energy was amazing for this match. There were chairs, the steel steps, a guard rail, the MITB briefcase, tables, it was fantastic! The finish came when Seth Rollins was hit with an AA from the top rope through a table.

Winner – John Cena

John Cena then cut a promo saying that they will next be in Manchester on April the 12th and that this crowd was the best they had seen all week, he then thanked us and that was that!

My Thoughts

I think it was very obvious that the guys were working much lighter due to this being a house show, and as much as I don’t blame the guys, they need to make sure that it still looks real. Although saying that, Sheamus looked just as stiff as ever, and there were some moments that had me genuinely shocked, but some strikes/moves looked so light that nobody believed it e.g. The five knuckle shuffle.

Overall for £40, I was expecting more from this show, although the Main Event was fantastic and a couple of other matches were good, the majority were just time-filling, comic relief or not good enough. I would like to see a TV taping just to see how much harder they work.
