Which matches are going to take place at No Mercy 2016? SmackDown’s second brand-exclusive event is set for October 9, 2016 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. So far, a few matches have been hinted at, but there’s plenty of room for WWE to go a different route. Let’s get an early jump on things and try to see if we can predict which matches are going to be on the card for No Mercy 2016.

CONFIRMED MATCHES

WWE World Championship: AJ Styles (c) vs. Dean Ambrose vs. John Cena

WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Alexa Bliss

PRESUMABLE MATCHES

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match

American Alpha didn’t make an appearance on SmackDown (as Jason Jordan wrestled on Main Event instead) and The Usos defeated The Hype Bros, so I’m thinking this is going to be The Usos getting a title match against Heath Slater and Rhyno. This could very well be where Jimmy and Jey win the belts, since Slater already has his contract and his comedic act most likely doesn’t have the legs to go several more months. The Usos need to continue to make a good impression with their heel turn and winning the titles will accomplish that, as well as give American Alpha a proper chase once they’re ready to come back.

Intercontinental Championship Match

Clearly, this feud between Dolph Ziggler and The Miz is not over, and it was pretty much spelled out that a rematch would take place, although it’s not officially confirmed yet, so that’s why it isn’t placed in the above category. Still, it’s a guarantee, so the real question is whether or not a stipulation is added to it. Ziggler teased the idea of Maryse being banned from ringside, which would seemingly position The Miz in a bad spot as he can’t use her to his benefit, but it also leaves lots of wiggle room for him to retain by cheating in any of the wide variety of other means we’ve seen people do over the years.

Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

For whatever reason, WWE didn’t bother to check Orton out and secure him for Backlash, so this match never happened. I’ve already groaned enough about that over the past few days, so I won’t continue that too much here, other than to say we’ll be getting the Backlash match at No Mercy rather than a rematch. Hopefully, this doesn’t mean the two of them do nothing but rest on the Backlash attack as being the only motivation for them to keep feuding. More needs to be added to the program for it to be more interesting to last beyond No Mercy. In the meantime, it looks like Orton will beat Erick Rowan on SmackDown to keep himself busy. Yay?

Nikki Bella vs. Carmella

Both of these women are feuding and they aren’t going to be involved in the championship match, as Alexa Bliss won the title shot by defeating both of them as well as Natalya and Naomi on this week’s SmackDown. However, that doesn’t mean they are suddenly buddy-buddy again. There’s room on the card for a second women’s match and while Natalya and Naomi are talented, they clearly aren’t locked into a program with each other like Carmella and Nikki. This may find itself on the pre-show rather than the main card, but that only depends on the priority of any other matches that may be added in the section below:

POTENTIAL OTHER MATCHES

Something with Curt Hawkins (Apollo Crews, Zack Ryder, Mojo Rawley, Kalisto)

They can’t have spent all this time promoting Curt Hawkins only to have him skip TWO events during this time frame, right? More ridiculous things have happened, but that’s just bothersome, and I’m not even a fan of the guy. Ideally, I’d like to see Hawkins insert himself into The Hype Bros by feuding with Mojo Rawley, teasing that he wants to shack back up with his former “brother”, Zack Ryder—or, alternatively, he can feud with Ryder to get back in the swing of things. Eventually, I’d like to see either the Major Hype Bros become a stable or for Mojo to get the nix and for the Major Bros to come back, but I’m also okay with them holding off on that and going in a different direction. If that’s the case, Apollo Crews could be a great opponent for Hawkins, since WWE clearly doesn’t seem to want to do anything else with the guy. Then again, maybe there’s more to his feud with Baron Corbin, and if all those options are off the table and Kalisto is healed in time, he can just be tossed out there to take a loss to Hawkins instead.

Baron Corbin vs. Jack Swagger

I’m not sure what WWE’s intentions are with this Jack Swagger move: a) they figured he wasn’t getting enough to do on Raw and with the cruiserweight division coming in, it made more sense to move him to SmackDown so he can get a proper push, or b) there’s so few people on SmackDown to work with and they needed someone to put Corbin over, so they figured they’d toss Swagger to the Lone Wolf because nobody cares if he loses. There’s just as much of a chance for both, which makes it hard to predict what’s going to happen here, but since they teased a clash between the two, it would seem they’ll be fighting over the next few weeks.
