Hey I'm going on a calorie counting diet and I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with this and can recommend easily available low calorie foods. I'm aiming for between 1000-1500 calories a day. It's tough!

greek is good
also there is Yoplait ones, (don't know if you get them in AU) but they are rather low in calories, have no fat and taste good.

The only diet i've ever done was a chemical diet (google it)
It was reccomended for people going into surgery.
It's a crash diet, and pretty damn extreme! Not to be taken lightly.
But... it is effective. I lost 10lbs in a week! :D

You don't need to go on a diet - behave yourself.....

Diets = bad
Eating the right food = good

This is true.
A male should eat 2500 (or i s it 2000?) calories a day. As long as you do regular exercise, then you should be fine.

this is probably better advice than any I can reasonably offer
seriously, I am a rather large man, so it's altogether possible that I have no idea how to eat right
now, if you want a good recipe for bacon-wrapped meatloaf, or a breakfast casserole, I can probably help there.

Yes we have Yoplait.

Basically it is all about healthy eating but controlling your portion sizes - something I've never been good at! And cutting out alcohol *wwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

Grilled chicken salads are a good choice and to try to eat small meals frequently like every 2 hours or so. Plus don't eat too close to bedtime as the food you consume will turn to fat unless you sleep like a fish out of water.

In Basic Training I ate 2500 - 3000 calories a day and lost 30 lbs in 3 weeks. It was the first time I was under 200 lbs in years. Mind you I'm six feet tall and built like Big Show.

I would never have guessed that.....maybe it's the freaky kid picture you have as your avatar...

Basic training food is devised to be stodge...to keep your energy levels up with little sleep and lots of physical exercise.....

You'll still always lose weight...I was 7 stone flat when I joined up - I was 6 stone 8 when I passed out.....of training that is, not literally...

I advise training for a marathon for a year - April this year, I was eating shed loads and was in the best shape of my life!

Want an easy diet.
Control how much you eat and don't eat anything with Gluten in it.
Gluten foods are very high in fat and sugary carbs so you eliminate most bad foods.

Coeliacs usually lose a shit ton once they stop the gluten foods :)

If you want to lose some weight quick, just go on a water and bread diet, you can eat and drink as much as you want and the weight flies off. When you resume with your regular diet, you won't gain the lost weight.

My cousin has done it with great success. You can eat quite well within the requirements of this diet. It's just temporary for quick results and once you're used to the portion sizes, it's ok. I just count calories in everything I put in my mouth Polly

There's a variety of witty one liners I could use in reply to that Rob....but I won't, I'll behave tonight.

The guys at work here are doing the liquid diet....it's brutal but two of them have lost near 4 stone in 12 weeks....

Some decent advice so far, but don't take any of those more fad/miracle type diets listed above seriously. They aren't going to do shit for you in the long term, unless you happen to have freaky genetics and Herculean willpower. Eating Weetabix for every meal while smoking menthols to curb the cravings may make you lose 7lbs in one week, but most of that will be body water/glycogen stores/etc, you'll feel like shit and it WILL come back again.

All you want to do is use up more calories than you take in. Kinda stating the obvious, but that's all you really need to do at the end of the day. All the minutae of losing weight like food types/vitamins/exercise regimen, while some of it is genuinely important to know (Which I'll get to), simply frills around the edges of that fact. It's generally not worth getting caught up in all that information.

An effective and healthy - practically foolproof - way of losing weight using calorie counting: calculate your BMR (google it) and plan your meals/exercises so that your intake ends up being (up to) 500kcal less than that number each day. You'll lose about a pound of fat a week - as in actual body fat rather than what you see on a scales. And it's not *incredibly* difficult to eliminate 500 calories from your diet. Hell, if you happen to drink "soda" exclusively, you'll probably lose more than that by just switching to water.

One pound may not seem like a whole lot, but going for anything more will likely trick your body to go into "famine survival mode", meaning your body will begin to adjust and store fat like a motherfucker when you eventually crash. Which you will, since you'll be feeling miserable as hell. I don't know how much you weigh, but I can guarantee going as low as 1000kcal a day will end in disaster. Also, it's very important that you use your BMR value rather than following the "recommended intake" labels that you see on cereal boxes and the like. I don't know about Australia, but the British Government recommends 2500kcal per day for an average male adult. About six years ago, I was borderline *obese* and yet my metabolism was sitting around 2000kcal/day - because I was a lazy shite, and the BMR takes your physical activity into account.

As for more specific tricks and tips: Bookmark this link. (www.liamrosen.com/fitness.html) Read the whole thing, twice - including all the stuff about cardio and weight-lifting, . You don't need to follow every single word like it's the bible, but I think it does a pretty good job at dispelling many of the myths about fitness. Plus a lot of the stuff on there is heavily grounded in common sense, and it's quite easy to read through. There's a lot of shitty websites out there creating a web of confusion, and you don't want to end up taking advice from a pro-ana site or a bodybuilding forum or whatever.

Another tidbit of advice from my reservoir is to try hard to make it as fun as possible. Yeah, fun. See, everyone seems to look at dieting/fitness as this giant obstacle, a negative experience that needs to be suffered through for a few months to achieve a target. While it's true that it requires some motivation at first, if you're doing things right you should really make your enjoyment of the whole process the number one priority. Because hopefully you'll be wanting to eat reasonably sensibly and be more physical for the rest of your life, not just a few weeks, so you don't want to making things hard for yourself.

If you can't already do so, learning how to cook is a good thing to do too. Definitely one of the top 10 awesome life decisions I've ever made.

And finally, a legitimate answer to your original question: Tuna and cereals are always excellent choices for low calorie food, in my book. Proteins in general are pretty filling, I find, so various meat products and nuts. Bananas. I've heard something about celery and some other veggies burning more calories through digestion than it actually has, not really sure how legit that claim is. And you should definitely AVOID drinking soda and pintfuls of milk.

mainly because those magical foods don't exist
the only way you are going to spend more calories eating something than it provides is if you are chewing up raw tree bark

Nice post Necro, cheers. I go along with that DAWG.

I did something like that for one of my classes at Uni - basically record what you eat and drink for a week, plug it into some program the Uni had, and it calculated all input of the food groups, nutrients, etc, and your Energy Intake and Energy Expenditure and then your BMR, I think. I can't really rememeber much, I normally just did stuff to pass it, and it unfortunately slips unhindered out my cranium thereafter.

I don't eat much, but was never a fitness freak, so it turned out my balance stayed pretty level - in that I never ate enough to put on alot of weight, and the little excercise I had was enough to prevent gain in weight.

Which was the all meat diet? Atkins?

Any diet where you eat heavy amounts of chicken, steak, ribs, and bacon is good with me...

But Necro made the most valid point. A diet without the proper exercise is useless. You can lower the calorie intake but by not doing cardio, lifting weights, or keeping it as simple as doing pushups and crunches will still result in more calories gained than expended in a given day.

this might be because I'm young... but I went on a no soda diet right out of high school... I turned 21 today, so it's been a while... but I still occasionally drink soda and I went from 240 ish pounds to 180.... that stuff is so bad for you... if you drink it cutting it out could help.
