View Full Version : What makes a 5 star match

What makes a great match? To me it's.
1. Having a great set of moves and technical skills.
2. When you can really pop the crowd.
3. Shocking surprises (sometimes).
4. Having real good (and underrated) wrestlers win titles at the end.

Have an interesting story. Give me a reason to care about the story, and tell it in the ring.
The match needs good psychology as well. Chain wrestling, high-flying, and big spots are fantastic and all, but they're nothing without psychology.
old school is cool

a five star match imo would have to be the seriousness and the emotion driven to the match. also false finishers where you think its the ending but its not.

I completely agree Bodom. First and foremost you have to give us a reason why we should care who's fighting. Two superstars (I dislike that word so much) can have a great match on Smackdown but if there is no reason behind it other than to fill time restraints in a segment then it doesn't matter how good it was. I guess we can go back to Wrestlemaina when HBK and the Undertaker had that epic war (part I). We (the rasslin fans) were emotionally invested in that match and those two legends knew it. Every move counted, every move meant something, it was one of the best matches I have ever seen and believe me I've seen a lot of them. That's what you call ring psychology folks. Those two took us on a ride with all the ups and downs in the match not to mention all the false finishes. By the end of that match the crowd and the viewers watching were completely drained. They proved to the world on that night, they might be getting up there with age but no one can dance as well as they can when the lights are at there brightest and on the grandest stage in sports entertainment. Thats how you have a 5 star match.

Excellent example. HBK vs Undertaker is the perfect recent example of what a 5 star match should be.
Take a basic outline of what made that match so f'n great and you have your "how-to-do" list

I think a big part of it is genuinely not knowing who will win. We all know that it's all predetermined but it's still nice to watch a match and have no idea who will be victorious. There are too many examples where it is just obvious before the bell rings who will have their hand raised in the end. The commentators give it away by saying they're 'sure' guy A will win (meaning he won't) or the fact that guy A got the advantage last week so guy B will this week make it too easy to predict. This is the main reason why I think The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak is no longer interesting... if a wrestler of Shawn Michaels standard couldn't break it, two years running (with the second year having such high stakes), then nobody ever will now. Everybody wonders who 'Taker will face at WM each year but it doesn't matter anymore because whoever it is will lose. Hell, even Triple Ego lost to 'Taker at Mania once. Sorry... went slightly off subject there! It's just too predictable. I'm not saying I want nonsensical Russo swerves in every match, hell no, but just a little more realism... the babyface doesn't always have to win, the heel doesn't always have to cheat and Cena doesn't always have to force you to tap out to a pathetic STF! Anyway... I also agree with what's been said previously: we as viewers need to be given good reason to care about the match taking place to be able to really enjoy it!

Hands down the best out of 5 series between MCMG and Beer Money. Each match was a 5 star match IMO. Epic series.
In recent WWE history it would be both of the Undertaker vs HBK matches. I was there in the audience for the first one and the crowd was electric.
Bit of a let down when it came to HHH vs Orton though.

I agree with MOST of what everybody is saying BUT here's something I want to point out.
HBK and Undertaker (pt.1) was a 5 star match, anybody that says it's not, is full of shit (so full of shit I'm not gonna censor it).
BUT, what a lot of people don't remember is that...there was no story. There REALLY TRULEY WASN'T a story. HBK just came off of an almost year long feud with Y2J then thrown into a good 4-5 month feud with JBL that ended in Febuary and then five weeks later he's at WM 25 fighting the Undertaker.
There was NO STORY. AT ALL. Not one enough to get us to care about.
So why did we?
Cuz we all freaking knew that UT and HBK would freaking deleiver HARDCORE. And they did.
So IMO, no you don't need a STORY to make a five star match, you just need the right people in the ring.
Hell HBK/UT (pt.2) had a better story then pt.1 and we can all agree that match wasn't as good as pt.1 BUT it's not as horrible as everybody makes it out to be.

When most people think of Wrestlemania, they think of HBK and Undertaker. That WAS the "story". Not your typical "story" but a story nonetheless.
