View Full Version : Should The IWC Propose To CM Punk???

I'm just wondering why CM Punk wasn't nearly as popular when he was a face in WWE. He still has the same set of mic skills and ring skills yet I don't recall many people kissing his ass so profusely then. For the record I think Punk's great and I think he plays the heel to perfection. What I'm wondering is, do people identify and get more turned on by his bad guy vitriol and self righteousness than they do when he was simply a face who set a good example?

What does it say about the state of general conciousness that the bad guy; the anti-hero is held in such high esteem?

Just saying. U MAD???:p

We like Punk for the same reason most of us like Jericho, they both epitomize what the IWC is all about. Great wrestlers and great talkers are appealing to us. The appeal of Cena and Orton to the "WWE Universe" is that they're the good guys. We don't care if you're a good guy or bad guy just as long as you can hold our attention.

I definately have enjoyed Punk as a heel from the get go. I found him to be much more nuanced than when he was face. But with that said, I wouldn't mind Punk turning again at this stage - I think he would bring some of the heel parts of his persona into a possible face run, making him more of a great tweener that would appeal to a wider audience in the WWE.

One other thing that crossed my mind too. When Punk was still pushing those Jeff Hardly dvd's even after Hardly had left when Hardly's lifestyle totally flew in the face of what Punk stands for and believes - that, to me, is being an absolute company man. He was told to go out and promote that and he did and it's a credit to his loyalty to WWE that he did. He obviously didn't think he was betraying his 'indy roots' (see my rant in John Cena Is The F*cking Man), he didn't 'cry-indy' (my term for it).

But yeah, the Jericho comparison is fair, perhaps the most apt Jericho comparison yet is CM Punk. I'd cheer them face or heel

I think villainous roles are just inherently meatier and more appealing to today's audiences. In our current popular culture, folks tend to gravitate more towards darker characters that give the people playing them the opportunity to act devilish and chew some scenery. It's the Tony Soprano effect; we now want to love the guys we're supposed to hate.

Good guys are boring! John Cena is as white bread now as Bob Backlund back in the day. But having a foil is a necessary thing for both sides

Pretty much. Nowadays, nobody likes a Boy Scout (unless one of the troop leaders is a pedophile).

The guy is just a really great worker through my eyes. I followed him from his indy days an I marked out when I saw him making his debut on ECW One Night Stand. The crowd absolutely loved him til' death despite him being a WWE star then. I loved his face work too. He was pretty darn funny an when he went heel he was just all kinds of amazing. I think he really shines more as the bad guy because from the way he speaks an motions inbetween every word you can easily tell that the guy is more comfortable in his current role.

i think i liked punk as a face, i tend to like new things as it liberates us from monotony, and he was new then and im pretty sure i still liked him as he continued his face period. but maybe the fact tht im unsure of it shows that as a face he was less succesful at keeping my interest in him? this is interesting to think about. i do know personally ive always liked the heels, apart from the exception of chris beniot, and when i was young i loved goldberg! he was my favourite by a mile! and i still love him but thats probably just down to nostalgia and sticking by ur own feelings, like i cant go against him for loyalty to my childhood if u know what i mean. and they'll be others who were faces when i was young that i liked and still like. booker t is one of my favourites and he was predominantly a face in wcw and il always like him. but hes gone back and forth a few times. if ive liked a wrestler as a heel and been so into them then most times ill still like them if they turn face, and want them to succeed, same if the other way round from my childhood eg booker t, beniot. i always wanted them to be the top dog heel or face, and it'll be the same for every other wrestler i like - jericho, shelton, regal, finlay, malenko, daniel bryan now! i also think with most ppl liking heels more than faces is down to less predictablity. a heel is, most of the time, less likely to defeat the fan fave, and as fans we want to shocked i think, at least a little surprise. and this little bit of unpredictablity is more endearing, to me anyway!

If Punk can bring back Pepsi Twist (The drink), I'll write him a personal love letter.

I don't like American, Australian, and Newzealand cola drinks though. I've tried the ones in India, and most of the bottle is fizz, so I like it much more :D Its called Thumbs Up.

I too have followed punk since his Indy days (from about 2001), even before he debuted for RoH, but I must point out that his debut for WWECW wasn't at ONS, it was on an episode of ECW taped at the Hammerstien Ballroom. The venue is the same one as the E used for ONS, so I'll forgive your error Sir ; )

Iron Bru is the marmite of fizzy drinks!
Tizer's like an English version of Iron Bru.

In all honesty I rarely drink fizzy drinks, except for a daily Red Bull (I'm addicted) and the occasional Dandilion and Burdock, but my wife must go through (at least) five 2 litre bottles of Sprite Zero a week!

A nice glass of Welches grape juice hits the spot every time.... Well, as far as a soft drink can quench my thirst anyway!

I loved the stuff but Tab clear hasn't been on sale here for over fifteen years. I'd call it the McRib of fizzy drinks, but at least Mickey D's heartattackwaitingtohappen-in-a-bun comes around once in a while! When they called Tab Clear limited edition, they meant it! (when I say they I'm in no way referring to Hogan & the gang!)

On topic (well, it is only fair): CM Punk is like Eddy, Benoit, Y2J, Malenko and other's of their kind. When wrestlers put as much into their performance as they do/did, and have had such great careers/matches before they hit the E, there's no way any self respecting smart mark (for lack of a better term) can not cheer for them, regardless of their role. We live to see these guys do well!

So, to answer the question. I would, but I'm already married ; )

It won't stop me from being jealous of whoever he does settle down with, though!

Only playing with you about the Iron Bru, mate, actually, I once had a Whiskey & Iron Bru, and apart from the Iron Bru it weren't half bad!

Regarding your Red Bull nightmare, I've one similar. After getting hammered on, Jack'n'Coke, about 10 years ago, I woke up with the mother of all hangover's, the first drink I saw in the fridge was a Dr Pepper. I took one sip of what was, at the time, my favourite drink, and promptly emptied my guts! I've never had one since, but I can still taste it to this day!! Ugh!

I found CM Punk kind of boring as a face. I remember when he cashed in the money in the bank briefcase. His reign was cut short by an "injury" by a beating which shows that it wasn't working.

On the other hand, if he were champ now, it would be great. If he beat Cena to become champ, double great.

I have enjoyed Punks full career. I hope they keep him heel for a while. Not many wrestlers get hit by fans but he has taken it twice in the last year. Just this last weekend a teen punched him and last year an old lady smacked him telling him he wasn't Jesus. I even have a dvd of Punk, Colt Cabana, and Pierce one of there friends. This is literally their first matches and it is great.

Thanks for that, but I'm fully aware of the dangers involved in consuming such a deadly beverage!
For the record: I work nights, and it's very physical! Aint no pencil pushing for the UK's number 1 poster!

My thread has been hijacked to promote soft drink/soda! Oh well, at least Punk would be proud!

Damn right he would be!

I did try to throw a couple of posts in that were on topic ; )

Nice thread BTW! You do get creative with these things don't you ; )

I try. ;)

We don't get most of those soad varieties here in Aus. Used to be able to get Tab but not for a long time. Occasionally you'll see a Dr Pepper. It's funny because I know Mountain Dew gets a bad rap but it's really popular here

Add Mountain Dew to list of Sodas that I drink. There's this little Chinese food place near where I live, and if I'm passing I have to buy a couple of bottles of imported MD! It's expensive, but worth it!

Imported? They don't carry it in the Grocery Stores??

Nope! Only occasionally do you see a mountain dew around these parts... Like I posted earlier, Fizzy Drinks in England are boring!

Mountain Dew is 30% of my blood. I should be legally dead. But hey, Code Red is like crack.

To quote a guy I played high school football with:

"If semen tasted like Mountain Dew Code Red, I'd be the world's biggest homosexual manwhore."

THE BEARD HAD COME BACK TO THE EWN FORUMS!

Hi.

I love Mountain Dew, and Kashindero is right, i haven't had it in ages, since i went on holiday to the US, and when i started at university i got a free bottle! happiest moment of my uni life

on topic, CM Punk is just so awesome, he's an incredible heel, a very likeable face, the fact that everyone has seen now all the skills he possesses in every department proves how incredible this guy is.

Thank goodness for the Well Policy WWE was forced to enact, or we'd still be having talentless freaks of nature shoved down our throats as "talent". C.M. Punk possesses the 3 skills necessary to flourish in today's WWE: The look, the mic skills and the in-ring skills...unfortunately in that order of importance by the WWE. Add to that the fact that the man can generate heat in the middle of an Alaskan blizzard, and we may be looking at one of the greatest heels of all time!! The Nexus affiliation was the icing on the cake, taking him to a new level of almost a 'psychosis-type state'. Barring a horrific injury, or some front office turd in WWE losing sight of what C.M. Punkis and can become, I say skies the limit!!!

Now, to address another important topic.....What is better than the orange crack I've come to know and love:
