Why are wrestling matches so short?

It seems far too common that matches have the potential to be great if they were longer. It seems that every time I'm reading results or someone's post that someone comments that they wish a certain match could have lasted longer. In terms of what makes a great match, I think that match length is almost as important as the qaulity of wrestling between the two competitors. A match can last 3 minutes and have some great moves and chemistry involved but it always seems that just when the match is heating up, BOOM...finisher and this ones over folks.
One particular match that inspired my to write this blog was the match between John Morrison and Tyson Kidd this past week on RAW. These two in the ring together looked like they could really put on quite a show. Both showed amazing athleticism, a good amount of offense, and even some fresh movesets (I mean, c'mon, did anyone else watch Tyson Kidd russian leg sweep Morrison off the second rope?) This was the first time in a few weeks that I found myself glued to the t.v during a match, but just as I was really getting into the match, Morrison hits his finisher and ends it. I know that the argument can be made that this match might have been kept short because it didnt really push any storylines and niether one of them is particularly good on the mic, but I would really like this to go somewhere, but thats besides the point. The fact is that wrestling fans(and Im not talking about that 12 year old girls in the stands every night) respect guys who can put in memorable matches. The front office cant just stick a mic in a guys hand, get him to pull off some quick victories and expect him to be uber over with the fans, thats just not the way it works. Fans have to respect the wrestling ability of the wrestlers before they can fully support them. I think thats where the recent pushes of Kofi Kingston, Evan Bourne, and John Morrison have fallen flat. The front office just didnt push them right.
Go back to Wrestlemania 13 with Bret Hart vs Steve Austin with Shamrock as the special guest ref. I think you can trace back much of Austin's success to this one match. If memory serves me right( I was only a kid when this match occured), prior to this match, Austin was kinda just this annoying heel who wasnt really viewed as a potential star, just kinda someone in the spotlight for a few months. Just incase anyone forgot how this match went down, Austin and Hart went 30 + minutes in a very good back in forth match which saw both men get in a good amount of offense. IMO the key to this match and maybe the most important moment in Austin's career came when Hart locked in the sharpshooter on Austin. Hart had the sharpshooter locked in for a good solid minute before Austin finally passed out from the pain. But I think the fact that Austin put on such a great match and lasted 30+ minutes with Hart garnered him a TON of respect from the fans and catapulted his stardom. Would Austin have gained this much respect from the fans if this match only lasted 10 minutes?
I understand that a 2 hour show doesnt give the creative team a ton of time to fit in a lot of matches, but I would rather see a few lengthy matches than these 3 minute matches that take place every week coupled with about 45 minutes of interviews, backstage confrontations and this damn anonymous g.m. My solution, give these performers more than 5 minutes to make a name for themselves and maybe WWE will be more successful in pushing new talent.

If I were responsible for WWE storylines...

With all of the current mid card talent on both raw and smackdown and with all the previous pushes they received but them seemingly disappeared, why...

With all of the current mid card talent on both raw and smackdown and with all the previous pushes they received but them seemingly disappeared, why not take those previously pushed mid carders and throw them into a stable. Have the background story of the stable be that they are unhappy with how much respect they are getting and that they deserve to be at the level of the cenas, jerichos, mysterios, etc. I dont think that this stable could be related to NEXUS because I actually believe that if the right wrestlers are chosen for this group(bourne, kingston, hardy, christian, mvp) and maybe Christian and/or Hardy take over as the leaders of the group, they have the possibility to be VERY over with the fans. Now how would I introduce this group to the WWE?

Scenario one: One way I could see this group making themselves known would be to show up at NOC. It would be cool if leading up to NOC, clues starting appearing on both RAW and Smackdown such as pairing Christian and Kofi in a tag match or seeing the group talking backstage before commercial. Then at NOC, have the group appear and cost wade barrett the championship right before hes about to win. I think that way you could have nexus out of the title picture so that the main event wrestlers have more time to establish rivalries between themselves(especially since this nexus angle seems to be stalling) and have nexus start fueding with this face stable. Since Wade Barrett is clearly a soon to be star, I think you have him slowly break away from nexus and start focusing on fueds with Cena, Orton, Jericho, Etc. This leads to a Nexus vs. Face stable elimination match at a PPV where the losing group must disband(most likely Nexus would lose). This would be a great way to propel those mid card talents (Kingston, Christian, etc. ) back into the picture and gain some credibility since Nexus is clearly a force right now. Also, its a great way to break up Nexus since they could only hang on for so long without Barrett. From here, you have one or two members of the face stable who are clearly the most over with the fans catapulted into the main event picture while the others could continue fueding with the remaining members of nexus and rebuild the tag team division. Results: There are a few new fresh faces in the main event picture including Wade Barrett, the Cena vs Nexus angle gets crushed because its clearly suffering, and the tag team division gets rebuilt.

Scenario two: Same setup with the face stable costing Barrett his championship and this new stable fueding with nexus. At this point, the face stable with christian, hardy, bourne, etc. should be very over with the crowd considering how much everyone clearly hates nexus. The two groups fued over the course of a few weeks and at the PPV elimination match between the faces and nexus, have the match come down to 2 faces vs. one member of nexus and have one of the faces turn on the other and cost him the match. For example, have the match come down to Kofi and Christian vs Otunga and have Kofi hit a Trouble in Paradise out of nowhere on Christian and drag Otunga on top of Christian while the ref is knocked out. Nexus wins and now Kofi is a legitimate heel(We have all seen how Kofi can absolutely lose his mind like when he boom dropped orton off the ledge). You then have a new top heel in the spotlight, mid carders like Christian are brought back in to the PPV scene, and members of Nexus and the face stable could still rebuild the tag division.

MNR 900th episode

Anyone else severely disappointed with the quality of this episode? Being the 900th episode and all, I expected a great show with a ton of action, but it was anything but great. It seemed like the show was jumping around all over the place and they were too busy with giving everyone air time then improving storylines. I get it, its a celebratory episode and its meant to showcase the top talents and personalities, but its still a wrestling show. There must have been a total of 25 minutes of wrestling and the main event didnt even kick off until 11:00. Kane's promo was great(like always), the SES segment really worked(except for the pointless fued with the Big Show), and the fact the John Cena wasnt the last man standing in the main event really surprised me, but this show was really disappointing. Disappointment seems to be a reoccuring theme week after week for WWE.

Dont get me wrong, Im a huge WWE fan and I have been since the mid 90's, but the whole thing is really starting to get stale(Some of you may argue that its been that way for a few years). Im tired of watching the same storylines week in and week out. We get it: John Cena will always headline the main event and almost always win, The Nexus will blindside someone, Chris Jericho will whine, Edge will betray the faces, the Miz will pull a victory out of his ass, and the divas will throw up a terrible display of wrestling. When was the last time there was a HUGE heel turn? When was the last time someone made a HUGE return or HUGE debut? When was the last time anything really shocked you? It just seems like at 11:15 every monday night, I come away disappointed by the last two hours.

I know that because of the whole pg rating, the creative team is very restricted as to what the can write into the show, but it doesnt mean that the show needs to be predictable. I would love to see a twist here and there, I would love for a new talent to get pushed over the course of several weeks and not end abruptly one night i.e Evan Bourne, Kofi Kingston etc. Bring in new exciting tag teams and reignite the tag divison. Its clear that WWE has been sputtering since the end of the attitude era and I dont know if its a fan being nostalgic and missing the glory days of The Rock vs Austin, Austin vs Vince, HHH vs Cactus Jack, and all those other great fueds, but it really seems like WWE needs a shot in the arm.
