What I’m on - Surviving the WWE

On WWE Survivor Series

As I sit in my room, listening to the thunderous rain outside, and the music on my iPod Touch going, it’s the perfect foreshadow into what I want to discuss. That simply being the gray card that is known as the WWE Survivor Series Pay-Per View. Back in the day, Survivor Series was one of the greatest spectacles to watch when it happened. However, lately it’s been a rather disappointment due to the lack of emphasis on Tag Team Wrestling. It’s a WWE decision, and you can’t be 100% mad at them.

With the WWE appealing more towards kids, and families as a whole, it’s difficult to sit through an entire WWE Pay-Per -View that was always fun to watch, and look at it now, and not be that psyched about it. Sure, the whole Awesome Truth vs. Basic Rockanomics (Yep, made that one up myself) may be a good match on the card, but I’m not looking forward for the Team Barrett/Team Orton match. In the end, I think we all know how it’ll end.

And in comes the aforementioned foreshadowed “Rain”….

It’ll be a basic match to where the “Good Guys” win, either being down by a lot, or neck and neck, back and fourth eliminations. Now, if it’s a back and fourth kind of match, then sure I’ll be interested. But, if I’m watching and see that Team Orton is down to one or two people, with Team Barrett still in tact, then it’s safe to say that we all know how that one will play out. To me, the Big Show and Mark Henry have little to no chemistry when they face each other. Last month when the ring imploded, I was stunned, but it wasn’t in a good way. When it happened, I thought to myself “Really? Recycling the infamous spot with Show and Lesnar?” It’s getting to a point to where WWE is stagnant, in terms of what to do with them. I for one hope this match proves me wrong, but we’ll have to see.

On Chyna wanting back into the WWE:

The obvious stance is “Really? With her being in porn, she has no chance in a PG company”. My verdict? 100 percent true. She doesn’t. Now if she wants into wrestling that bad, I would strongly suggest waiting a while, atleast until TNA has cooled their heads, seeing as how they were pretty peeved once your little “Backdoor Adventure” was released. Then, once the storm is settled, I would put a call into Jeff Jarrett again. The odds of Chyna working for the WWE again are very slim to none. If they have any interest in the 9th Wonder of the world, it would be in a non - wrestling role, but that’s my opinon. Maybe manage a baby face to help him/her get over, but other than that, it doesn’t look good for her.

Thoughts on WWE signing Tough Enough contestants:

I just don’t get it, I really don’t. What is the point in having the contest when you’re going to sign all of these people who didn’t even win? I understand giving a contract to maybe a runner-up, like Martin, or Luke, but to give a contract to a contestant who was the first one eliminated from the show just doesn’t make much sense to me. If they didn’t show you any poise then, what makes you think that they’ll “Break from the pack”, or show you they’re “Not green?” Nothing. That’s the equivalent of Survivor saying “Whoever gets eliminated first will get the million dollars, along with the actual winner”…There’s no point in having the contest.

And, for those of you who say that Tough Enough had people who were under contract with WWE at the time, are right to an extent. They did, however WWE basically told them that if they were to compete and lose, they’re contracts would null and void. A huge risk? Yes. But for someone like Andy (Who at the time was under contract to WWE) risk it all, and win not only the money, but a new contract must’ve been surreal in many ways. As for someone like Martin, who didn’t get offered anything afterwards….It must suck for him, knowing that people who got voted out way early on are getting contracts, when someone like him, who busted his ass, only to unfortunately withdraw must be tough on him.

Is the WWE becoming dull?

I will say that WWE is catering to a younger crowd, and for that, it can become stale to the older fans who have been watching for years. Like many, I’ve been a die hard wrestling fan for as long as I can remember, but at the end of the day you just have to have faith. The WWE is doing a shift right now. They’re catering to the younger crowd so that those fans can grow, and latch onto the WWE instantly. So, if you’re a male over the age of 17, and say it’s dull and boring, there’s my guess as to why it is.

It needs to be said that WWE will never be like the Attitude Era ever again. Sure, we can watch clips of Sable taking off her shirt to reveal the handprints, or maybe Shane McMahons epic jump from the scaffold all day on YouTube, but the fact remains that they simply have no reason to do that today. Back in the 90’s, you had WWE, WCW, and ECW. Now you have WWE, TNA, and ROH. Well, TNA is small scale, compared to not only WWE, but WCW as well. I will say that if Ring of Honor was on a station like, say FX, or any other major station, we’d possibly could see Attitude Era 2.0, but it’s not a viable option for the McMahon’s to bring back the Hardcore title, or to have a newstyle DX. So therefore, it’d be pointless, and on some levels moronic for them to start an Attitude Era.

With all of this rambling for the question above, all I have to say is that It’s dull, but for a certain audience. At the same time, WWE likes to incorporate somethings into the product, so that the older fans can be satisfied, for example, Cody Rhodes bringing back the old school Intercontinental Title, or The Rock returning. There’s plenty of reasons to still watch if you’re an older fan. All the while, if you’re a younger fan, you have celebrity involvement, or Super-Cena,

What can TNA change in order to compete with WWE?

Well, I would have to say the first thing they need to change, is just what Paul Heyman said a while back, and that’s to cut the older guys, or atleast guys with decent star power. It may sound crazy to cut some of the more successful ones, but in a way he was right. This is a business where you have to constantly figure out what’s wrong with your product, or else you won’t last long, and with TNA, they have guys there that still don’t know when to give it up, or the guys who are barely holding on.

I would focus on not only the mildly successful, but also the Knockouts as much as possible. WWE cannot hold a candle in anyway to TNA’s Knockouts, and so I think that if they give their Knockouts as much time as possible, without it outshining the rest, a lot of fans might tune into iMPACT more and more. Another big part is to mention WWE as little as humanly possible. I think it’s safe to say that if you mention a company in anyway, you’re giving them free publicity, and ultimately (Granted WWE is more known than TNA) you want focus solely on your own product in order to be successful.

That’ll do it for now, be sure to read next Monday’s edition!

I have about 35 hours or so of archived WWE footage on my PS3. I sit in my room, on my computer, and occasionally glancing up at the TV screen to see what match is going on. But, I noticed something today while glancing up. Professional Wrestling (Or Sports Entertainment) is missing something. The ability to translate the story that you are telling onto the big screen.

It was once a wise man by the name of Paul Heyman who told Rey Mysterio and Psychosis in 1995 that they didn’t have a set schedule. He considered both supreme athletes that the ring was their canvas, and their bodies were their paintbrushes. Tell a story. Not just any story, though. Tell one that captivates the crowd. Tell a story that years from now, the fans will still remember every single event, and every single maneuver that was displayed on that very night.

I was watching the “WWE Top 50” DVD, and every one of the men on the countdown had the ability to storytell, not just on the microphone, but with their bodies. There were a few exceptions that I still believe to this day; As anyone else, I too believe that John Cena, Batista, etc…are all bland in the ring, and therefore, is the reason why the fans don’t exactly agree with their maneuvers.

We all know the clichés of Cena; “Women and little kids like him, men hate him…” We’ve heard that since 2007, and we likely will always hear it. The reason why is because he doesn’t put what the same effort in the ring. Sure, he might do a move that catches our attention, but he doesn’t have that one move that can take your breath away in awe. Look at Randy Orton, for example. At first, he was considered “Green.” he had nothing that separated him from the pack. But over the years, he went from the guy in blue and yellow trunks, to the Legend Killer, to The Apex Predator. We’ve seen a true transition, and from my perspective, it all starts with telling the story in the ring. Just knowing that Orton can hit the RKO out of nowhere, and can find a way to do it with style every time is his way of captivating us.

With all of that said, I cannot watch half of the stars on the WWE roster (Including Divas). They’re all the same. All the same heels. All the same faces. But, there are those few who do stick out, and always will. Look at Zack Ryder, for example. A man with all the talent, charisma, and attitude to become a marquee player. It will always blow my mind as to why WWE continues to pass on him. Luckily, they now know what they have, as they’ve beginning giving him a push as Teddy Long’s “Assistant”. It may not be much, but it’s a start.

Whenever a new face comes in, I take a good look at them. Predominantly, I take a good look at their promo skills. What does that individual have that separates him from everyone else who is busting their ass in this business just to make a name for themselves? You have to look at their promo skills, as you can tell if they have that little spark of ingenious that they have to possess if they want to survive.

If I was a judge on Tough Enough, I would’ve had Luke win. From a fans’ perspective, I’m glad that WWE chose Andy. However, if I was in WWE’s shoes, Luke had the “it” factor. The confidence, and the ability to back it up. Usually a star only has one of those. But to see Luke carry himself, and talk smack was a hot combination. Would he be able to tell a story in the WWE? Well, that wouldn’t be up to me. That’s up to WWE themselves.

CM Punk started in WWE riding on the side of a car at Wrestlemania 21 for John Cena’s typical over the top gimmicky entrance. Flash forward to 2011, and he is taking the WWE Universe, Sports Entertainment, and Professional Wrestling by storm. Heel or Face, CM Punk has that rare “it” factor. Punk is the guy who usually wouldn’t be in the main event, or wouldn’t normally hold the title. But, WWE gives it to him because he has that ability to tell a story in the ring. You see him right before he does the GTS, and he makes a pillow-like motion with his hands, signaling that his opponent will be “going to sleep”. That is what I’m talking about in terms of telling a story, aside from the overall pure wrestling ability.

I can tell you a basic John Cena match. His opponent is in control for 80-90 percent of the match, but the last five minutes is pure Cena. He’ll hit the leg drop from the tope rope. He’ll land a few punches. Before you know it, Cena hit’s the Attitude Adjustment, and locks in the STF. That’s not storytelling. That’s predictability. I think what separates Hogan from Cena is that Hogan could sell more than Cena. That said, Hogan was more of a story teller than Cena.

Believe me when I say, I’m not picking on Cena whatsoever. I’m merely using him as an example of a bad story-teller. There definitely are others that come to mind that I’m not going to mention, for the length of this article. Overall, that is what WWE is missing, and desperately needs.

List of A-Z Problems of the WWE

In this blog, I will simply go down the line, addressing problems in the WWE.

In this blog, I will simply go down the line, addressing problems in the WWE.

A-Austin needs to come back and wrestle. Recent reports have stated that he said he still has "Fuel in the tank" persay. That said, chances are he likely won't, as he is focused on his outside projects.

B- Bad booking. Simply put, the "WWE All Star" edition of Monday Night RAW had some iffy matches. ie, a 7 on 7 Divas match that lasted a total of 3 minutes.

C- Christian never should have been heel. He had a good amount of momentum as a fan favorite. That said, It shouldn't exactly ruin his reign as a Heel.

D - Dolph Ziggler needs to be used more.

E - ECW. Never should have been cancelled for NXT. Think about it; Atleast ECW had the same ratings as they did on TNN. NXT hardly beat ECW rating-rise, and even that is a shock.

F - Fire Evan Bourne. I know that I might get heat for saying that, but it's not because I have anything against him. It's the fact that he's never used. Atleast in ROH, or any other indy, he was a major player. Have him go back to where he's sucessful.

G - Great Khali and Jinder Mahal. Jinder looks like he has talent. As for Khali? He's past his prime, and can barely make a name anymore.

H - Horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE wrestling. This typically happens with the Divas, but some spots that the actual Wrestlers---er-- "Superstars" can barely execute. I looked at Sheamus do a Cloverleaf, and he hardly knew how to do it. It's a simple move!

I - I don't understand why they still use Hornswoggle. It was funny in 2006-2008, but now it's too bland what he does. Either use him, or lose him.

J - John Cena calling his fans "Cenation". It doesn't stick, and likely never will. NEVER go the Hogan route. Don't call your fans a particular name. it's pointless.

K - Knowledge, or lack thereof from creative.

M - More emphasis on attitude. I know this isn't the Attitude Era, and it never will be. But, the general demographic for WWE is the 18-49 Male...MALE demographic. Males that age (And I am one of them) want to see VIOLENCE...Not the PG crap.

N - Need. Listen to the "WWE Universe" and find out what they need to see in order to stay hooked. TNA did a study group, and found out that their fans wanted to see an ECW reunion. Do a study group, and see what the results say.

O - Others need a role. Don't have guys like Jack Korpela heading Superstars. Jack is a more talented announcer than Booker T, or Matt Striker.

P - PLEASE update your characters. Having Daniel Bryan coming out to superhero music is simply moronic.

Q - Quietly remove the term "Sports Entertainment". Pro Wrestling. It is not a sport. Although, it is entertainment.

R - Truth is amazing. Leave him the way he is as a Heel (Sorry, couldn't resist using Truth here)

S - Start your damn Cable Network. Whether if it is on Cable TV, PPV, Internet, or Netflix, just start it. Some of us are tired of waiting

T - Try having Superstars as its own brand. That may sound silly but just listen. Superstars is already its own brand. It utilizes the same talent every week, and nothing changes. Make a belt, and defend it every now and then on the show. Don't have to do PPV's.

U - Use Jack Swagger more. The dude has talent.

V - Vary the usage of PG more. Create more of an edgy feel, but at the same time cater to a younger audience. As stated before, WWE has the PG feel, but demands a more violent edge. Keep the violence, but cater to the young'ens at the same time.

W - Wrestling. That is what you are, and don't try to change it to "Sports Entertainment."

X - XCUSE Vickie Guerrero from sucking....Okay, you have to admit, X is hard.

Y - Young talent needs to step it up. How many times will Cena main even RAW? We need guys like Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, or Ted Dibiase to start stepping up.

Z - ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzZZzzz....This is what will happen if WWE stays the same. The product will grow boring and tiresome, and as a result, many may tune into TNA, and perhaps we can start a new war between companies.
