Raw Reaction - 1/16/12

Rate this Entry
What's poppin folks! It's time once again for another addition of Raw Reaction. I'm not going to waste any time so without further ado...

Opening Segment -
I have to say that I enjoyed that segment. It was refreshing to not see Cena open up Raw and I'm glad they let Punk do his duties as champion and open the show. Also you can't go wrong with a Mick Foley appearance so there's always that. I think it's plain to see Dolph Ziggler has greatly improved his promo skills and he's next to ready to get rid of Vickie and go out on his own. I kind of wish they would have left Foley's Rumble proclamation off because he would be a good surprise entrant which is always a big part of the Rumble. I think one thing this promo lacked was build to the Punk/Ziggler match. Yeah they traded insults a little but they haven't done a whole ton to make this interesting. Nor did they really build to anything else on the show which is odd to see, but oh well.

Match #1 - Tag Team Championship - Epico/Primo (c.) vs Air Boom
Really short match, I was hoping for this to go a little while which is really disappointing. I'm glad they didn't take the belts off Primo/Epico and I'm really glad they defended the straps because it adds prestige to the belts and makes the division look like it exists. That being said I'm curious as to why they took the belts off Air Boom at a Live Event and why Kofi has been getting shafted as of late. This can't be because of Bourne's suspension, that was over a month ago and why would Kofi be getting punished? Just a little odd to see, ya know? Anyway 1/5 for the match, decent action but incredibly too short for my liking.

Match #2 - U.S Championship - Zack Ryder (c.) vs. Jack Swagger
A little unfortunate that Ryder had to drop the title here, it was honestly only a matter of time seeing as he hasn't been drawing really any ratings since winning the title. Hopefully they haven't given up on him completely and spend time on rebuilding him so that when he gets it back it wont be a flop. Definitely happy for Swagger though, it's good to see he's finally winning matches and is back on the other end of a push. Hopefully this year he finds his way back to the main event, or at least close to. I can't really give this a rating considering it was so one sided, so I'll have to give it a dud. Also I feel like Ryder almost killed Swagger's finisher. It took three Gutwrench Powerbombs (NOT Suplex Cole...) so put Ryder away with an "injured" back. Doesn't make much sense considering it's Swagger's finisher and it's supposed to signify the end of the match. I can see in other circumstances this happening but given the current circumstance I can't really justify them doing that.

Match #3 - Kelly/Alicia vs. Bellas
what a colossal waste of time....I can't even give this a dud.

Match #4 - Over the top Rope Challenge
R-Truth is becoming one of my favorite parts of Raw. I honestly laughed at the picture of Pinocchio and when Truth said "I don't even know if that's PG!" Decent little battle royal and it actually did put me in the mood for the Rumble. Also really glad to see R-Truth get the win here instead of the predictable Sheamus, not that I would've had a problem with it. I know Truth wont win but I do hope he gets a World Title push this year, he definitely deserves it. 2/5 for the battle royal, it was ok for what it was.

Match #5 - Jack Swagger vs. John Cena
Nothing takes momentum away from a man that just won a title like putting him in a match with Cena! I have to say that that was a very interesting segment and I actually got behind Cena when he was kicking the tar out of Swagger. I definitely like this new John Cena and that was one of the most interesting segments so far. Obviously no rating but I am definitely intrigued in this Cena story and he's definitely more interesting now than he's been since 2005.

Match #6 - Brodus Clay vs. JTG
Call me crazy but I'm diggin this gimmick. I know I kind of bashed it last week but Brodus is obviously into this gimmick and it shows on tv. I'm glad WWE went with something other than the generic monster #273 and it's actually entertaining. I don't think people should complain about this, I don't see him getting a main event push, maybe a storyline or two, but I think they'd turn him into something more serious before he goes for a major title. Clearly no rating (notice the trend?) but it was a squash so it's passable. Poor JTG, I think we can safely assume he's gonna be released when they go to clean house.

Match #7 - Bryan/Jericho/Punk vs. Henry/Otunga/Ziggler
First off...why is Otunga in this match? Like what did he do to deserve a Raw main event...hell...A main event? Any who...not too bad of a match, but the excitement came from the after match. What a strong promo from Punk, this feud is really coming into it's own and I for one am looking forward to next week to see where it goes. Yeah that's right...this weeks Raw made me anxious to see nexts weeks. Say what? My only gripe is the fact that Punk/Laurinaitis is overshadowing Punk/Ziggler, but it is the story of the match so I can get along with it I suppose. The match was a little overbooked but it was definitely exciting and it's only Raw so I can get along with it. I'm also glad Jericho did his walk away in the match rather than another waste-of-time promo. I still can't really get into it but it does create buzz and gets you interested in where it's going to I can let it go. 3/5 for the match, wouldn't tell you to go out of your way to see it but it was what it was.

Show Highs -
Opening segment
Swagger winning gold
Cena's beatdown
Closing segment

Show Lows -
Short squash matches
Divas
Cole
Unnecessary Perez Hilton appearance

Overall I think this weeks Raw was a VAST improvement from last weeks. It wasn't perfect but from top to bottom it was entertaining and kept your interest...or at least mine. Like I said it made me anxious to see next weeks show which is almost impossible these days so I can't really complain. It seems creative and shows in general are on the rise and hopefully we can expect that to be a continuing trend with Wrestlemania coming up. Well folks, until next time, it's been real, it's been fun, but it hasn't been real fun. Deuces.

definate definate improvement... it started of shaky.. but improved throughout... and the ending was awesome.. the sort of ending that the wwe should want to end on most weeks, because now i cannot wait for next week to see how it carries on.

unfortunatly i do wonder how the wwe will drop the ball again.

when will they realise that punk's magic on the microphone is the way forward.

Good blog. I agree with your point. Great promos from Ziggler and Punk, but nothing really focusing on the two of them. And is it just me..or did Vickie seem uglier than usual? I hope after the Rumble, Ziggler dumps Vickie or vice versa and Ziggler goes on his own. Though for me, Cole wasn't really a low this episode. He could have been a lot more annoying like he has in the past. Either way, good blog bro, and good review of tonights Raw

Best episode of Raw in a while. Pissed off Cena with Kane gloating was predictable, but well executed. I thought the tag match was a bit of a waste, Air Boom looked much better out there. Divas were crap as usual w/ Perez being the icing on the crap cake, though I did laugh at him foiling the twin magic bit.

I totally cracked up at Jerhico marking out in the ring, totally epic. Punk and Ziggler were in top form, both wrestling and promo wise.

    All told, a 4/5 show.

I think the reason Ziggler and Punk are not having one -on -one promo segment is because creative is wary of Ziggler if he would be able to handle Punk's SUPREME mic skills infront of LIVE audience .
This is one way of building Ziggler's mic skills without making him weak infront of the champion .
