The Superstar Grade #1: Christian

Along with my "What They Should've Done" Series, I'm starting a second series, to be posted bi-weekly. I grade superstars based on several factors, WWE or former WWE only as I don't watch TNA or anything else enough, and I thought I would start with my favorite: Christian
Christian in the ring isn't the best of all time, but I'd say Christian
is a great ring worker. His moveset is diverse, hardly ever performing
the same move twice in one match. He can carry an opponent in a match,
which is a testament to his ring work. Though Christian is an excellent
ring worker, he has his times where he doesn't put out his best
performance, which isn't something you want to do too often. We can see
some of his best ring performances recently against Randy Orton at
SummerSlam, Money in the Bank and Capitol Punishment in 2011, and some
of his not as great ring performances against Sheamus before his injury.
As good as Christian is in the ring, he isn't as great on the mic. He
is pretty bland half the time, and when he isn't, it's with his snappy
comebacks. He definitely isn't the worst on the mic, but I can't say he
is great. He makes jokes on the mic, which cause laughter, and that's a
good thing. He is a better mic worker as a heel, though he was
constantly saying he wanted "one more match" which was extremely
repetitive and took away from his work. At best, Christian is average.
Christian's theme makes a statement, when we hear "GO!" the crowd
cheers. Some say his Waterproof Blonde theme is better, but it doesn't
make as much of an impact when you hear it. The entrance itself isn't
very good. It's, for lack of a better word, generic. It's him walking
out, looking around the arena, then walking down the ramp with a few
running steps, then getting in the ring. It's nothing special, but it's
better than say John Cena who salutes then runs down. His theme saves
him here, and boosts his grade a little.
Christian always gets a reaction from the crowd, and it's almost always
the one that they aim for. Christian gets cheered as a face, and booed
as a heel, that's what you want. It just shows that Christian is a
veteran ring worker and knows what he's doing in order to get the right
reaction. That's what you want out of a worker, to know what they're
Christian has changed his look since he debuted back in 1998. He went
from the long, blonde, straight hair to the short, sorta spiked hair.
He went from that shirt to no shirt in the ring, and changed the look
of his tights. You want to change the way you look, but if you saw
Christian walking down the street in normal clothes and had no idea who
he was, you'd think he was just an average guy. Back then he looked at
least like someone that would be like a rock star or something, someone
famous. Now he looks like he would be just a normal guy. This grade
includes his look from when he debuted, and may or may not be generous.
Christian is one of the most decorated stars of all time. Aside from
his indy and TNA accomplishments, which include 2 NWA Title Reigns and
2 other world title reigns, Christian's WWE accomplishments alone are
outstanding. 4 time World Champion, twice with the ECW Championship and
twice with the World Heavyweight Championship. 4 time Intercontinental
Champion, 9 time World Tag Team Champion, 7 with Edge, 1 with Lance
Storm and 1 Chris Jericho. 1 time European, Hardcore and Light
Heavyweight Champion, He is WWE's 23rd Triple Crown Champion and 11th
Grand Slam Champion. Christian is an amazing star accomplishment wise,
and my grade reflects that.
This is just my opinion on Christian. This has everything to do with
the above, but nothing to do with it at the same time, if that makes
sense. Christian is my favorite superstar, he has been since his first
injury after Jeff Hardy left WWE. He was injured when I started to like
him, and when he came back at Elimination Chamber, that was a total
mark out moment for me. Same thing when he won the World Heavyweight
Championship, and was REALLY pissed when he lost it to Orton. He is one
of my all time favorites.
That's my first blog of the series, comment or don't, you're choice.
