Hello guys. With Summerslam 2012 right around the corner, what better way to get ready for the biggest PPV event of the Summer than to look back on another old school Summerslam PPV which is Summerslam 1999! Like always, I will give my honest opinion on the matches and rate the PPV overall as unbiased as possible! First, let's take a look at the match card:
Jeff Jarrett vs D'Lo Brown for the IC and European title
Tag team turmoil for the #1 contenders spot to the tag team titles
Al Snow vs The Big Boss Man in a Hardcore match for the Hardcore title
Ivory vs Tori for the Womens title
Ken Shamrock vs Steve Blackman in a Lion's Den weapons match
Test vs Shane Mcmahon in a Greenwich Street Fight
The Unholy Alliance (Big Show and The Undertaker) vs Xpac and Kane for the tag team titles
The Rock vs Billy Gunn in a Kiss My Ass match
Mankind vs Stone Cold vs Triple H for the WWE title
This looks like a GREAT card here. All of these match look worth seeing. Let's get to the reviewing!
1st match: Jeff Jarrett vs D'Lo Brown for the IC and European title
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj3ZE206aLI
Match thoughts: A very good opener with D'Lo Brown going against Jeff Jarrett with both the IC and European titles being on the line. Both good workers and put on a pretty watchable match here. Mark Henry turning on D'Lo Brown by hitting him with Jarrett's guitar was a nice little surprise. It wasn't anything great but it was far from being bad. Outcome: Jeff Jarrett wins via pinfall. Rating: Average
2nd match: Tag team turmoil for the #1 contenders spot to the tag team titles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwXiVNOdT9s
Match thoughts: The teams involved are The Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian, Mideon and Viscera, Droz and Prince Albert, The Acolytes, and the Hollys. The rules to this tag team turmoil match is that it's basically a gauntlet match but with tag teams involved. That's a nice little concept that should be brought back for the current tag team division. The match starts with Edge and Christian vs The Hardys. The Hardys get eliminated. Mideon and Viscera are the next ones to face Edge and Christian. Mideon and Viscera are eliminated. Droz and Prince Albert are the next ones to face Edge and Christian. Droz and Prince Albert are elminated. This is entertaining so far. The Acolytes are up next to face Edge and Christian. Edge and Christian are elmintaed due to interference from the Hollys. Edge and Christian worked great out there. Now it's down to The Hollys and The Acolytes. The Hollys are elminated. This was solid tag team action with these tag teams giving us a fun match. Outcome: The Acolytes win. Rating: Good.
3rd match: Al Snow vs The Big Boss Man in a Hardcore match for the Hardcore title
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Dleg40d0g
Match thoughts: Wow, Al Snow is over with the fans. I laughed my ass off when Al Snow jumped over Big Boss Man during his entrance. They brawl all the way backstage and then brawl some more outside. They brawl inside this bar. This is an odd Hardcore match to say the least. In a cool looking spot, Al Snow jumps off of a bar table and onto Big Bossman whose laying on a table. The match ends with Al Snow pinning Big Bossman on a table. This is your average Hardcore match. Nothing special here. Outcome: Al Snow wins. Rating: Average.
4th match: Ivory vs Tori for the Womens title
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAfy2SIUfN4
Match thoughts: This was boring but not a bad match. Although this went on a little too long. Outcome: Ivory retains. Rating: Average
5th match: Ken Shamrock vs Steve Blackmen in a Lion's Den weapons match
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dev6lQV9kQM
Match thoughts: The Lion's Den match is a great gimmick match. I always loved it for some reason. This was a good match between the two. I was into this the whole time. Good stuff. Outcome: Ken Shamrock wins. Rating: Good.
6th match: Test vs Shane Mcmahon in a Greenwich street fight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esKx8kAkcfI
Match thoughts: The stipulation to this match is, if Test loses, he cannot be with Stephanie Mcmahon. This was a very good street fight. Test was a great worker and so was Shane. Test got a massive pop when he won the match. I wonder why WWE never gave him a main event push. Anyways, good match. Outcome: Test wins. Rating: Good.
7th match: The Unholy Alliance vs Xpac and Kane for the tag tean titles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWmlIbaQTk4
Match thoughts: Damn, this was a great tag team match! I was enjoying this a lot. I loved this rivalry between these two teams. It's tag team matches like these that made the tag team division back in the Attitude Era must-see. Great match. Outcome: The Undertaker and The Big Show win the tag team titles. Rating: Great.
8th match: The Rock vs Billy Gunn in a Kiss My Ass match
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoHDD8uxG6A
Match thoughts: This is a Kiss My Ass match which means the loser has to kiss a large women's backside. That's an.... interesting gimmick match. Billy Gunn ends up kissing the large women's backside and gets a Rock bottom. The wrestling in this match was good. The Rock was still trying to get over with his face persona so the pops he got here weren't s strong as much but he would go on to being one of the best of all time. Billy Gunn was always a great wrestler who was over with the fans. The match was good and the gimmick to the match was funny. What more can you ask for? Outcome: The Rock wins. Rating: Good.
Main event: Mankind vs Triple H vs Stone Cold for the WWE title
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-SgDmsRZpQ
Match thoughts: Jesse Ventura is refereeing this match. He is the governor of Minnesota at this time so this is a pretty big deal. This Triple Threat match was good but really underwhelming. With Triple H, Stone Cold, and Mic Foley, you expect a masterpiece but it really wasn't. Still a good main event though. Outcome: Mankind wins the match and the WWE title. Rating: Good.
Final rating: I'm going to give this PPV a 7.5/10. It had a lot of good matches but this show didn't feel special. I thought it could have been better but it was far from being a bad PPV. It was a great PPV and I highly recommend it.
