Ring of Honor was a small independent wrestling company founded in 2002 that has somehow founded a worldwide audience. Ring of Honor has had some of the greatest wrestlers of all time step between there ropes, wrestlers such as the late great Eddie Guerrero, Japanese legend Kenta Kobashi, one of the most underrated technical wrestlers in WWE history Lance Storm, among others. Though Ring of Honor have had these legends come and wrestle for them, they have in there history have helped put on the map wrestlers who would soon be the future of not just ROH but the wrestling world.
Ring of Honor would at the start of 2002 would sign and have some of the best matches in this generation with matches like Current Tag Team Champion Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) wrestling Former TNA World Heavyweight Champion Austin Aries in which they would have 40 min matches one of which lasted over 80 mins. Daniel Bryan was one of the first ROH stars and was considered the best, yet he would not win the ROH title for the first 2 1/2 years in the company when he finally defeated James Gibson (Jamie Noble), Christopher Daniels, and Samoa Joe for his first title in the company.
Current Reigning WWE Champion CM Punk would be considered by some to be the best heel in his time in ROH, he would have many classic matches with Daniel Bryan which lasted 30-40 mins and would even continue in WWE when they would continue to have classic matches at PPVs and on RAW. CM Punk would make some very memorable moments such as cutting a promo after winning the ROH title in which he claimed to be the devil, and he would even sign his WWE contract on the ROH title. CM Punk would go from having classic matches in ROH with Samoa Joe, and AJ Styles to main eventing Wrestlemania with the likes of Chris Jericho, and would have one of the longest reigns as WWE Champion in the companies history.
Antonio Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli) the United States Champion (the best one we have had in some time) would be part of one of the greatest tag teams ever to grace ROH and the rest of the indy circuit with Chris Hero (your going to be seeing him as Kassius Ohno on the main roster) having classic matches with the Worlds Greatest Tag Team and the Briscoes. But not only in tag team wrestling he would also have success as a single star. Though he would not win the Ring of Honor World title he was a top contender for the title having beaten some of Ring of Honor's top talent like El Generico. Even having great matches with his tag team partner (enemy at the time) Chris Hero. He would eventually be a World Champion in PWG, but his time in ROH is where he got noticed for his hard-hitting and Very European moves such as his vicious uppercuts.
3 Ring of Honor superstars 2 Former World Champions, and all 3 are current champions each bringing prestige to there individual titles in there own way. Daniel Bryan has helped bring more attention to the tag team division along with Kane, Antonio Cesaro has been the best united states champion having taken the title very seriously as opposed to other united states champions (Santino Marella, Zack Ryder, and Jack Swagger) and finally CM Punk who has been the longest reigning WWE Champion defending his title against the likes of Jericho, former ROH opponent Daniel Bryan, and even John Cena. Think about it a Ring of Honor star with tattoos all over his body and a guy who was considered not to have a look has held the WWE title longer than Triple H, Kurt Angle, and The Rock... And its still growing.
I love how Ring of Honor stars always find away to get to the top, and this trend doesn't seem to be stopping. We have guys like Seth Rollins (Tyler Black in Ring of Honor look him up), and Kassius Ohno (Chris Hero) coming to the main roster, and I can guaranteed to those two will be future main-eventers in there own right.
