Pre-show Note: I want to get the storylines up and going before I get into details so the first shows might seem a bit short.
WWE SmackDown Results
Friday January 8th 2010
Target Center –Minneapolis, Minnesota
The show kicks off with greetings from Matt Striker and Todd Grisham and we are off to a quick start as Dolph Ziggler is in the ring for his rematch for the Intercontinental Championship that he lost last week to Kaval.
* Kaval defeats Dolph Ziggler via pin fall to retain the Intercontinental Championship; the champ then grabs a microphone after the match issuing an open challenge next to anyone in the SmackDown locker room to face him in a match for the gold
After the first commercial break, The Big Show makes his way to the ring and bickers about how it took three men to beat him last week on SmackDown and if anyone of them were to face him one-on-one, they would not stand a change. This brings out Edge who says that Show should find another place to make excuses because nobody really cares then challenges him to a match. Show quickly accepts but the new GM of SmackDown Bret Hart appears in the TitanTron. Hart says that he would really like to see Edge versus Big Show but would like to save that for a later date and instead says that they will be part of a mega tag match for tonight’s main event: Edge & Rey Mysterio vs. Big Show & Kane.
We take another commercial break and when we come back, we will see Tiffany in one-on-one action against Layla.
* Layla defeats Tiffany via pin fall after some help from Michelle McCool. After the match, LayCool try to add insult to injure by double-teamming Tiffany, which brings out Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly and the trio reverse the tables on the co-champions. As LayCool retreat up the ramp, Michelle grabs a microphone and challenges Beth, Kelly and Tiffany to a 3 vs. 3 Tag Match next week and promises to bring in the right partner that will even up the odds.
The attention then turns to the GM’s office. Bret Hart faces the camera and announces that he is reactivating a prestigious championship belt that was a stepping-stone for many wrestlers that went on to become future World Champions. Hart says that later on tonight we will be treated to a special Battle Royal involving 10 SmackDown superstars to crown a new European champion!
After the break, Alberto Del Rio comes out and says that he has never been embarrassed like he was last week by a low-life named Chavo Guerrero. Chavo comes out and says that maybe him and Eddie did not always see eye to eye, but he will never let anyone disgrace the Guerrero family name. Alberto says that he will get his revenge because he is challenging Chavo next week, but he does not want a match, he wants a fight – A street fight. Del Rio warns Guerrero that things will be very different this time around. Chavo welcomes the challenges and says what he did to him last week is nothing compared to what he has in store for him next week.
In the backstage area, Jonathan Coachman catches up with the new #1 Contender Kofi Kingston and asks him when he will cash in his shot for the title. Kofi says he has been doing a lot of thinking and thinks the right thing to do is… to announce it in the ring later on tonight.
* The participants in the 10-Men Battle Royal for the newly reactivated European Championship include Christian, Drew McIntyre, Finlay, MVP, Chris Masters, Cody Rhodes, Joey Mercury, Tyler Reks, JTG and Shad. Joey Mercury is first to be eliminated by Christian. Shad and JTG double team to eliminate Chris Masters and Tyler Reks, but get surprised from behind by Drew McIntyre and Finlay who eliminate Cryme Tyme duo. Cody Rhodes is eliminated next by MVP and it’s down to the final four – Christian, McIntyre, MVP and Finlay. Christian is next to go by McIntyre. MVP then eliminates Drew and in return Finlay tosses MVP out and is the new European Champion!
* In the main event, Kane and Big Show defeated Edge and Rey Mysterio when Kane pinned Mysterio after a Chokeslam. Edge and Big Show went at it outside the ring and took their fight to the crowd. As the World Champion celebrated in the ring, “S.O.S.” by Collie Buddz played in the loud speakers and out came the #1 Contender Kofi Kingston to a huge ovation. Kofi said that after consulting with Bret Hart, it looks like the next time SmackDown will be having a pay-per-view will be at the Royal Rumble Sunday January 24th. Kofi says while twenty men will be battling it out to determine who goes on to face the champion at Wrestlemania 26, he is going to be focused on becoming that champion they will face!
