The highest-rated season of House was 19.9 million viewers compared to The Mentalist's peak of 17.5 million. So, yeah, there was some difference in their respective audiences, but not quite the disparity that you're making there out to be. These numbers also don't paint the entire picture as they're peak and not really indicative of the overall scene, as The Mentalist viewership has yet to plunge in the same way that House did (seriously, that shit basically ended up falling off a cliff). Factors such as time-slot and competition in said time-slot also aren't being taken into account. So, really, for argument's sake, these shows did pull roughly the same numbers.
The character of Lisbon is basically Jane's Watson, though they have some romantic entanglements. But the point still stands.
I really like Psych, but it's honestly not a show that I follow religiously. Like, I catch repeats from time to time and I'm content with that. It sucks to hear this, though. The only romance that show should ever really make room for is the one between Shawn and Gus. ;)
