If I may get all philosophical again........
On the manner of cutscenes.
I like Left 4 Dead because it has none. It gets that shit out of my way so I can kill some Zombies. Think of it as the Tetris of shooters. You can just boot it up and go without having to see the same cutscene over and over. If you want a story it is there, look online and you can read the comics to understand the back story on your favorite characters. Once you get down to it, you don't need to know the motivations of your character. Just pick up that crowbar and bash some heads in.
Mass Effect has one of the best stories ever, in the history of games. The characters are fully fleshed out and seem like real people(or whatever). They all have rich interesting back story just like real people. The story it's self is told wonderfully. With new twists and turns made at all the right spots. Not 180 turns like M. Night does. The turns that make you understand exactly what Sovereign was talking about in the first game. That cause questions and create answers to old ones. And it is because of all of that, I over look the looseness of the combat controls and the other things they don't do right. Because the story and characters greatly out weigh the flaws.
I don't expect great storied experiences from the Halo games. Just give me the minimum motivation and direction to kill the Covenant. I find the stories told in the novels to be head, shoulders, abs, hips, and thighs above the games. I like the game play because it is right up my ally. A first person, non-cover based shooter with varied and colorful weapons and enemies. I love sci-fi. In a world of brown, cover based shooters, it actually stands out.

I wasn't having a go at you personally with that "this generation" remark. I've been gaming since the mid-80's too, btw
I just really can't get behind this "competitive online multiplayer has to be in EVERY game" that seems to be the thing with this PS360 generation. I don't know, maybe i'm old fashioned and like to do my competitive multi oldskool. With buddies around.
