Since you asked nicely, and have been playing nice recently I'll try to explain 
It's kind of a combination of both really. The superior football coverage in the UK is Sky Sports, but ITV have always shown Champions League games. So those two have always been mainstays for the games.
Channel 5 has pretty much been a laughing stock since it launched as a channel, back in '97.
Since the Europa league is seen as inferior to the Champions League, combined with the fact that Channel 5 have the rights for Europa League games. It's like being punched in the face twice for these spoilt fans of teams who get Champions League football every season I suppose.
I'm not a hater though, I was well thankfull for Channel 5's coverage of both of our UEFA cup adventures!!
