Careful using R4 for 3DS!

Hm, was gonna buy a flash card for my 3DS but I may reconsider now.

Surely you'll be fine if you just reject any firmware updates and/or disable the internet connection.

Nintendo has a similar anti-piracy system in place for the Wii, but the homebrew community developed an app called Priiloader that completely blocks any kind of system update prompts, amongst various other things. Just wait until someone develops a similar one for the DS or something. (If it doesn't already exist)

I doubt this is true.

Nintendo notoriously don't bother with this. They implement what they do before the Handhelds are released and leave them be afterwards.

as Necroyeti says, for the Wii there is anti-bricking stuff in place and mines always been fine. I use my R4i all the time, and my R4 is updated to latest firmware with no issues. If you're concerned, then don't update until you know where you stand.
