While I appreciate almost any remark about Hogan's lack of wrestling ability, I think it's pretty well understood that he got to where he WAS just by being a huge guy who was booked very strongly. McMahon loves big guys and likes to push them heavily. Combine that with the perfect mixture of his "real American" persona and the timely release of the Rocky saga and you've got an immediate hit with 1980's American families.
As for how he's managed to stay where he is, I think it's mostly due to deep-rooted rasslin' business men and women who assume that he knows how to run the business today just because he was successful in the past. Hogan knows nothing about today's evolved form of the sport. He's just not good for business anymore.
