And here in lies my problem with them hiring Silva out the gate.
Joey Ryan has the in-ring ability and should be the first to earn a GutCheck contract, but they botched it by giving it to Silva. Now, if they give one to Ryan, it will make the GutCheck seem like just a way for them to publically announce who they're hiring, rather than giving these indy wrestlers a chance to earn a contract.
I said it the other day that they needed these Gut Check guys to go against better talent than a "Robbie E" and I was very pleased to see A Double as his opponent. Yes, AA helped to make this kid look good, but let's give the kid some credit.
He held a 5+ min match with Aries on National TV (not sydication or iPPV) and he had maybe 2 issues? (
1 He failed to properly place his right hand as support in order to get Aries over for his pump handle fall away, but the kid muscled the move regardless.
2 His jump into the brain buster was weak, but still enough for Aries to get the move up and executed properly.)
His gimmick might be that of a cheesey 80s porn star, but he pulled off the inring psychology VERY well. The mustache finger comb was hilarious (especially when Aries did it at the end of the bout) and the 3 pin attempt (first just flat, then 1 leg hook, then both leg hook) were both great sellers to him being that "desperate" to make a name for himself, heelish and cocky character. I'd want to see Ryan again before I saw Silva again for sure.
Hell, even my wife made the same comment about Silva v. Ryan The promo test will be interesting. However, with them hiring Silva out the gate, as good as his national television debut was, I don't think TNA can afford to jepordize GutCheck concept in order to give a contract to this guy...
No matter how much better he is than Silva.
