Thing about Goldberg was, the vast majority of his opponents during his streak were jobbers. Plus he couldn't sell offense, and was so hilariously bad in the ring that it bordered on dangerous. This is the man who ended Bret Hart's career afterall.

was a very good angle for WCW. It seemed as if WWE were heading in this direction with Alberto Del Rio (a competent wrestler!) at first which would've been awesome..... until Mysterio the Ego refused to do the job. (yet a-fuckin-gain)

I agree... I think someone like that could work in the modern era, as long as it was clear that they were nuts like The Joker rather than a 'real' clown.
The original Doink (Matt Bourne?) modified the gimmick into a more Joker-style lately in the indies. There's a picture somewhere on the net.
