As many of you know, I'm statistically OCD, and I've gone completely overboard on this olympics. Basically, I think the way they ordered the medals table is so primative, it's basically "most golds wins" so I've spent hours ordering the nations my way.
Basically, I've taken the results of every single sport and taken the top eight competitors, and given them the following points 20-15-10-6-4-3-2-1. I've then totalled up the points for each country for each sport, and then allocated the top ten nations in the sport overall points 20-15-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. Then I've added up all the totals to get the overall order. It was quite a project. The advantages were that all the sports now have the same weighting, while using the olympic system team sports are worth next to nothing. It also takes into account athletes who have done well (silver-8th) instead of just focusing on wins.
For anybody who is statistically minded like me, here it is
