The problem isn't that it was in character or not, but that it was said at all.
Lazy stereotype jokes are a problem in WWE, and it's the same thing as making fun for someone based on colour of skin, gender or sexuality.
In character or not, these guys are speaking in front of kids and some adults, that might not appreciate the fact that it is a work, that these aren't things to say or believe.
Tout and Twitter are being aimed and pushed onto their younger audience and this is why WWE have to be so careful with what they broadcast.
Ignore whether you are ok with it, and think more if you want your kids being fed racist jokes by a TV show you thought was safe for them to watch.
You can appreciate it's a work, but like you said, maybe not everyone else can.
