This was the biggest turnoff for the Southern fans. The focus on "big names" isn't the factor but rather the focus on far more storylines than needed was something not desired. Wrestling, from what I gather based off other fans here, doesn't need a storyline having seven levels to be successful. Jericho and Malenko didn't have seven underlying reasons as to why the two hated each other. You put it out there that Jericho is jealous of Malenko and says he is better than him (hence the 1004 holds). This sets up the match for these two to have. If the
match is a success, you can carry the program further. If it is a failure, you end the program there without the need to drag it on further. That's why people like me don't mind bad angles like AJ/Daniels/Kaz/Claire because the quality of matches produced FAR outweigh how bad the angle was as a whole. The greatest payoff comes when you have people who can actually wrestle and have a quality angle to work with (MCMG vs. Beer Money, Inc., Punk vs. Jericho, Angle vs. Joe), but the wrestling is what makes the angle a success down here; not the banter.

This is a realist point of view on things. This is not a way of saying that wrestling will always be in a "decline" but rather a way of putting the reality that wrestling has peaked and had its moment in the sun; now quit bothering with the ratings and start focusing on what made it so popular in the first place. Unfortunately, a publically traded company has to worry about the numbers which, in turn, makes the fans worry about the numbers. As a fan of the NFL, I would not care if they drew the highest ratings, or the lowest because I am still a fan who is going to watch. We can no longer have that with wrestling.

I think wrestling on the whole has been on the decline and even if they wanted to, WWE or another company won't achieve those type of ratings again, maybe ever. People misjudge when they look at the emerging popularity of TNA and think that the rating and the audience are just waiting to be achieved and reached again. That's not the case. The bar hasn't just been lowered for WWE, but for the whole business - it's just perceived differently because TNA is still under the bar. If/when they get there, it's highly unlikely to be raised again.
