381: The Magic Number

Tomorrow Decemeber 5th 2012 CM Punk will enter the history books by holding the wwe championship for 381 days. To put this feat into perspective that's the longest continuous title reign for this belt since February 5th 1988 when Hogan lost to Andre. Almost a quarter of a century has passed since someone held the title for longer than punk but where does this stand in the all time accomplishments. It's scripted entertainment we all know that but holding a title is more difficult in this era especially with today's instant gratification Internet crowd that recycle though wrestlers quickly and demand the belt be placed on the new flavor of the month. Where would your rank this achievement in the all time greatest list for pro wrestlers?

Being the champ means nothing when he's still being over shadowed by a certain John Cena. Don't get me wrong, I like Punk, he's a solid in ring worker and has the potential to be a great talker but he clearly isn't as adaptable as one needs to be to be the top guy. Compare him to Daniel Bryan who went from a hard hitting heel to an anti-face face without any trouble. He doesn't stumble through promos because he's trying not to swear, he hasn't made a big fuss that he's been a comedy character all year he's embraced it and is doing a great job. CM Punk demanded things went his way and seems to be floundering around because Cena still gets a bigger pop/boo any time he's one screen.

I'm surprised that WWE have kept the belt on one person for as long as they have but to me that just says more about WWE writers not being able to come up with a decent storyline as opposed to CM Punk's great achievement as a 'Sports Entertainer.'

It's a massive achievement and when Heyman put it into perspective on the longest reigning champ for the past 25yrs, that was huge. I didn't even realize it. But no, he's not the best champion of all time.

Best WWE/WWF/WWWF Champions of all time is debatable but should be debated IMO off these former champs: Hulk Hogan, Bob Backlund, Bruno Sammartino, Buddy Rogers.

My money has always been on Bruno. 2 reigns over the span of 11 years is a harder record to break then the Undertaker's WM streak IMO.

I've never been impressed with Punk in the ring but letting him hold the title for this long really means that the company has faith in him.
