The stuff that I gravitate to is almost never the stuff made for the purpose of getting played on the radio- hell, I barely even listened to terrestrial, even back then- so I doubt that had anything to do with it.
I never gave up on entire genres, either; I just tended to look to get different stuff out of said genres as I got older. Like, nu-metal is pretty much beyond passé at this point, but I haven't completely given on it. I mean, there's no way I could bring myself to listen to another new Korn or Limp Bizkit record ever again, but the Deftones shifted from a band that I really liked to one of my top 5 favorite bands EVER. I'll still even put on some Sevendust from time to time, too (their Southside Double-Wide album is all kinds of underrated).
