By being irrelevant yet relevant, I'm talking about somebody that WWE uses frequently, is a well known talent on the roster, and usually appears on TV multiple times a week, yet never seems to be anything important or has anything specific going on for them. Used all the time, but not really used at all. This is something I've noticed that has happened to alot of guys over the past year or so.
The 3 obvious standouts for me wasting away in random Puragtory would be:
Randy Orton - Yeah, Randy Orton is one of the most successful Superstars of the past decade, and at one point of time, he was considered the #2 star in the company. But let's face it, he hasn't really done anything since 2011. Orton currently spends his days competing in multiple high profile matches, but none of his wins have any meaning or point behind them. Who's The Apex Predator going to beat this week? Is there a chance he might actually lose? Oh my! Alot of his needless victories feel like WWE is just trying remind the fans that Orton is supposed to be relevant, when in reality, he hasn't been for a while. They may change in the near future, but for now, he's just...there.
The Miz - The Awesome One is another guy that hasn't really done anything useful since 2011. Just as WWE enjoys reminding people that Randy Orton is supposed to be relevant, at the same time, they seem to enjoy pretending that The Miz is. Yeah, he's usually on TV 2-3 times a week. Does he do commentary? Yep. Does he have a talk show segment? You betcha. Does he have a movie coming out? Looks like it. But has any of this contributed to a major storyline or angle? Nope. Could we do without all of that extra stuff? Oh yes. Doing commentary, movies, and talk show segments are all fine and dandy, but when you're main job is to wrestle, side projects shouldn't be the main focus.
Rey Mysterio - With Rey Mysterio I can give a little bit of underestanding to. This guy is a wrestling veteran who has, at this point in his career, done everything there is to do. But that hasn't changed the fact that he's completely useless on television these days. Mysterio is like Orton, and just drifts from match to match week after week. Not to mention, WWE's attempts for Mysterio to be a "mentor" to his "successor" Sin Cara have failed. Violating wellness policies and multiple injuries may be part of the problem, but the bigger picture is a refusal to admit you've outlasted your welcome in the WWE and it's time to hang up the boots.
