A MAN was today convicted of the brutal killing of his neighbour.Robert Baker murdered John Coates then dumped his naked body in the bath.
He then stole items, including an Xbox, from his 61-year-old victim’s flat in Fleet House, Thorntree.
Baker, 24, denied the charge but was today convicted by a jury at Teesside Crown Court.
The court had earlier heard how Baker’s thumbprint was found at the scene of the crime in Mr Coates’ blood on a piece of plastic.
Prosecutor Nicholas Lumley QC told the jury this was the “fundamental” piece of evidence.
“Mr Baker simply had no explanation for it.” Mr Lumley said.

The prosecutor told the jury that when he asked Baker about the thumbprint “his mask slipped” from his face. He added: “His voice wavered and he trembled. He trembled when he had to look at an image of the sitting room where he had done what he did.”
He added: “The only explanation is one that he couldn’t give. That he killed John Coates.”
After the murder Baker made desperate attempts to clear away evidence.
He used a mop and bucket to clean up blood in Mr Coates’ sitting room and was later seen carrying heavy bags out of the block of flat.
The prosecution say these were filled with evidence including Mr Coates’ clothes and his games consoles.
Defending Martin Bethel had told the jury that Mr Coates was a “heavy man” and said that Baker would not have been able to move his body on his own.
He also suggested that the piece of plastic with Baker’s thumbprint on may have been left at the scene by someone else.
He added: “The prosecutor says his voice was wavering and trembling. Well, wouldn’t yours be?
“This is a young man who is innocent until you find him guilty. Did he come across to you as a cold, calculating killer?”

I stopped watching about five minutes after he was announced as the new Pope, but I reckon at the end of his speech, he said "Now let's have a look at what you could have won!" by which point, all the other candidates were made to walk through the square to a polite applause from all those in attendance.

At least, I hope that's what happened.
