probably one of the most tense films I've ever seen.
I thought Hidden was an utter abortion of a movie, and this is coming from someone who would put Haneke is his top 50. Just horrible. It has a nifty gimmick going for it, but unlike other (better) slow-paced/minimalist/naturalistic films, it forgets to actually have a plot to make the audience care. Almost everything is ambiguous for no real reason, it fails to connect any of the few ideas it has, evokes practically no emotional response throughout, and then doesn't even bother to give any sort of conclusion! It's the kind of film that pretends to have a deeper meaning when in fact it doesn't have any meaning whatsoever. It's the kind of film that one should expect to be churned out by a 2nd year film student, not by a top Austrian auteur funded by French money. Absolutely amateurish in every way. Fuck this dud of a film.
But of course, it's exactly the type of thing the critics would circle jerk over though. It's French, artsy, nihilistic, boring, vague and was made by a big-name European director. No wonder it won the Palme d'or or whatever at Cannes. (that might have been The White Ribbon, not looking it up)
