damn right
The real question is, why wouldn't you? When you trade freedom for safety you get neither and deserve neither. That isn't just a handy quote, it's the truth. Banning weapons does not make you safer, and there is no peer reviewed scientific data to suggest that it does. Again, it is actually harder to get a gun in the US, then it is in Canada, and they have less gun violence than we do. Shouting "Get rid of the firearms" just serves to distract people from the real issues that cause crime. Nobody ever said "Hey, since I can get a gun so easily, I should go shoot someone" Motive exists first, then opportunity.
Or to put it another way, the Columbine school shooting would have happened without guns being legal, those kids made their own explosives, which carries a much harsher punishment than carrying a gun illegally does in any country. Someone looking to break a law does not really sweat breaking smaller laws along the way. Thieves don't stop to worry if they are also trespassing, murderers aren't sweating gun laws when killing you or disposing of the evidence later.
You want to link how easy it is to legally obtain a gun and actual gun violence because you feel that legally banning something will somehow control the amount available of that thing, yet history has shown us time and time again with prohibitions against porn, drugs, alcohol and weapons that the opposite effect happens, the amount of an item increases, and the people with the biggest supply of contraband are criminals.
If you really want to stop violent crime, gang crime especially, you need to find ways to have it be less profitable, not create a new business demand for them to fill. Legalize drugs, legalize prostitution, and suddenly the money dries up. Put them out of business, and you take away the biggest motive for these crimes, and make a hefty amount in taxes as well.
Use the taxes for phase 2, rebuilding the "ghettos" and improving the school district. Then you have even less need, and your total population is much better off.
If you merely outlaw firearms, you just encourage outlaws to get more firearms.
