I see what you're saying. About the only thing that it could help for is to understand and explain the rules (depending on how over the top the anime is). I'd love to watch one on Basketball because I'm lost when it comes to why people get fouls.

Well, that's exactly what it did for me. I think I understand the basics of American football now.
Oh, I know of 1 basketball anime that started airing this year. It's called Kuroko's Basketball.
I haven't watched it yet though, so I don't know if they explain the rules.
