The life of a pro wrestler is a hectic one. Muscled up, often steroid-filled, testosterone-raging men who travel the globe on a regular basis can get a little grumpy from time-to-time. At times, these guys can lose their cool and get into altercations with each other. In a new series I’m starting, “Backstage Fight Stories,” we’re going to take a look at some infamous behind-the-scenes brawls involving professional wrestlers.

As I get older, and the business continues to roll ahead, I’m learning more and more that the fan base is filled with a lot of younger fans. I’m learning that stories I’ve heard that I assume are common-knowledge to all wrestling fans, are actually brand new to this generation of fans. So while you and I may remember these stories as if they just happened yesterday, we have to understand that thousands upon thousands of younger fans have never heard of them. If you have, then enjoy reading about them again. If you haven’t, strap on your seat belts because some of them will shock the hell out of you. Today, I start with one of the most shocking in pro wrestling history: Sid Vicious vs. Arn Anderson.

Sid Eudy is a former WWE Champion who worked in WWE under the names “Psycho Sid” and “Sid Justice.” He had a lengthy run in the NWA and WCW as Sid Vicious, which is the name he is most associated with to the majority of pro wrestling fans.

Arn Anderson is one of the best to ever lace up a pair of wrestling boots. He is credited as the guy who came up with the Four Horsemen faction, a stable of wrestlers that would set the trend for the acts that followed, such as D-Generation X (D-X) and the New World Order (nWo). He threw up four fingers during a combined interview segment that also featured Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, J.J. Dillon and Ole Anderson, and spoke about the “four horsemen of the apocalypse.” History was made.

On October 27, 1993 in Blackburn, Lancashire, during a WCW tour of the United Kingdom, Sid Vicious and Arn Anderson got into one of the most insane brawls in wrestling history. It all started at a bar when the two were drinking with several of the wrestlers in the company and an argument broke out. Obviously in any fight there are multiple sides to a story. The basic gist is Anderson was talking about Sid not being “horseman material” while Sid argued that Anderson has never actually drawn money in the business.

Later that evening, Sid took to Anderson’s hotel room with a foreign object. There has been a number of versions of what the foreign object really was, but for the sake of argument let’s assume it was something that could hurt another human being. As the story goes, Sid whacked Anderson with the object, nearly knocking him out. Anderson, in retaliation, grabbed a pair of scissors. The two began struggling back-and-forth where in the end, Anderson was reportedly stabbed twenty times violently with the scissors, while Sid himself was stabbed four or more times as well. Another wrestler, 2 Cold Scorpio, apparently broke things up. Both guys were rushed to the hospital, with both guys, especially Anderson, losing a scary amount of blood. In the end, the altercation cost Sid his job and was actually the impetus of WWE tagging Sid with the “Psycho” moniker.

There are a number of “shoot interviews” where both guys discuss the situation. In almost all of them, Anderson declines to go into any real detail on what happened. Many interviews with Sid, however, have gone deep into the story with Sid explaining his side of things. Most are unavailable as the owners of the interviews, most of which are available on DVD, have had the content removed from sites such as YouTube. There is one recent radio interview, however, where Sid talks about the incident. If you would like to listen to Sid’s side of the story, click here.

So there you have it. Part one of the “Backstage Fight Stories” series. Join us next time where we will take a look at a backstage pro wrestling fight involving Scott Steiner and Diamond Dallas Page.
