According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, former WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio’s current AAA contract will expire in a matter of days at the end of the year. As of now, he’ll continue working with them in 2016 but it won’t be nearly as many dates. As noted several weeks ago, Mysterio recently signed a deal with Lucha Underground and that deal will pay more money than the AAA deal. The deal will also allow him to be at home more often as they tape weeks on TV in advance. Mysterio’s plan for 2016 is to work less dates due to the risk of injury. That is one of the reasons he left WWE – the constant schedule and risk of injuries. AAA wants Mysterio to work their big live events such as TripleMania, etc.

At the beginning of 2015, AAA had Mysterio, Myzteziz and Alberto Del Rio along with big plans for Perro Aguayo Jr. With the death of Perro, and the departures of Myzteziz and Alberto Del Rio, it causes a lack of big names on top of the card. The original plan was for Mysterio and Johnny Mundo to work a program around the now vacated AAA Mega Championship. But if Mysterio isn’t around much, it takes away a lot of the importance as far as the title goes. It also causes an issue, as there will be no major Mexican superstars to work with Mundo and Brian Cage. Psycho Clown or Fenix could be pushed as top faces, but that will be a big drop in both marketability and drawing.
