During a recent interview with WZ Weekly, former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes discussed his jump from WWE to the independent scene, having more creative freedom and more. Here are some highlights:

On his jump from WWE to the independents: “What I am doing is enriching. It’s enriching. Last night I got to test my legit ability and I also got to test my mouth a little bit. I tell people that I have this skill set and that I’m damn good. If you go out there with Trevor Lee and aren’t able to showcase that then it’s completely a farce. It’s an opportunity to do that. In the same night, tonight, it’s me and the Rock & Roll Express in a six-man. A six-man decades in the making. Probably no one would assume it would happen but it is happening.”

On enjoying his creative freedom and getting back to his roots: “It’s like when politicians want to go and touch base with their constituents again. They go do those town halls. They go do grass roots stuff. These feel like town halls. They’ve been raucous and large crowd town halls. Good times.”

On being able work with several major companies at the same time: “I’m trying to rewrite the rules and do it in an honest way. Signing a long term contract for me anywhere… it’s flattering to be offered one. A lot of them that have come to me do have a lot to offer. There isn’t just one game in town anymore with WWE. However, “The List” is the greatest indicator of what I am trying to do. “The List” has names on it that are at Ring of Honor, TNA and NJPW. What we are trying to do is rewrite the rules. We are trying to do something that, you can say this but in this case it’s real, something in wrestling that no one has done, yet, and be successful at it. Not just do it for doing it’s sake but actually make that crossover exciting. Can you imagine Ring of Honor vs TNA matches? Can you imagine some of the dream matches you can do with both companies? Some kind of cross promotion. I’m not sure, I’m clearly getting far ahead of myself, I’d like very much for me to have the freedom to go wherever and people be responsive to it. So far everyone have been really wonderful about working together.”
