Ring of Honor has announced via ROHWrestling.com that Kevin Steen will defend the ROH World Title against Davey Richards at ROH Best of the World 2012. In what will be Richards’ one shot at the belt while Steen holds it. The iPPV will go down June 24th.

The site quotes Richards as saying, “I let the world down in Toronto. I let myself down and I broke the promise I made to Jim and to Ring of Honor to end Kevin Steen. This one chance, this one opportunity to make it right, that is all I need. Hell it’s the only thing I have right now as far as I’m concerned. I really don’t care if it takes me playing in Kevin’s backyard to get the job done because despite what many may think of me, I can play without rules just as well as anybody. Remember the Ladder War Kevin? Remember our street fight in Boston? I can get just as down and dirty as you if I’m pushed. It’s not a pretty side of me, it’s not a side I look forward to letting out, but I’m a wolf Kev and sometimes I guess you just have to let that out of the cage.”

Here is the official presser:

This weekend on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV it became official…at “Best in the World 2012” on Sunday June 24th it will be ROH World Champion Kevin Steen defending against former champion, the man he beat for the title at “Border Wars”, “The American Wolf” Davey Richards!

On May 12th, Richards walked into what was most definitely hostile territory to defend his championship in what was billed as Steen’s one & only World Title opportunity, and per Davey’s demand, the Package Piledriver was legal for that bout. The fight was a brutal one, with neither man pulling their punches, but it all came down to that very move ROH officials had banned. The Package Piledriver, combined with an inadvertently exposed turnbuckle & Sleeper Suplex, led to a three count and new ROH World Champion in “Wrestling’s Worst Nightmare”.

Now, on June 24th, the crowd is likely to be torn as the NYC faithful have shown Steen a great deal of love in his numerous “appearances” in 2011 but have also been a tad venomous at him depending on the situation. The same has been true for Davey Richards as the fan ignited in uproarious applause when he captured the World Title at “Best in the World 2011” but were equally jubilant when Adam Cole pinned him & Steen interrupted him at the “10th Anniversary Event”.

And if the mood of the crowd wasn’t enough of a factor, it was also determined that this rematch will be Davey’s only opportunity at regaining the championship while Steen is in possession of the title. Not only that but in this fight it is Anything Goes, No DQ, and No Time Limit…

“I let the world down in Toronto.” said Davey to ROHWrestling.com, “I let myself down and I broke the promise I made to Jim and to Ring of Honor to end Kevin Steen.

The major question mark in the whole scenario we witnessed on TV though is “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards. The former World Champion will receive his chance to dethrone Steen on June 15th when ROH debuts in Charleston so we could very well be looking at a rematch of our “Best in the World 2011” championship bout should Eddie be successful. Either way, Davey will get his shot in NYC…

The ROH World Championship will be defended against “The American Wolf” Davey Richards live on iPPV and it all takes place June 24th at “Best in the World 2012”! Coming to you live from The Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, can Davey make it two years in a row he claims the World Title at “BITW”?
