UFC 196 Results: Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz, Miesha Tate vs. Holly Holm

Welterweight bout: Nate Diaz (18-10) vs. Conor McGregor (19-2)

Round 1: They clinch at 4:33 after McGregor missed a wild back kick. Diaz worked him over with knees to the body. They separate moments later and McGregor landed an overhand left. Diaz landed a good right hand at 2:59. Both men were mixing up their strikes nicely. McGregor was leaving his hands by his side and was getting tagged. Diaz was bleeding from his right temple. Diaz took McGregor down with a minute to go and McGregor scrambled on top in guard.

Round 2: McGregor opened the round with a spinning kick. McGregor continued to T-off with a left over hand strike. Diaz clinched at 3:42 and pressed him up against the fence. McGregor separated as Diaz started to bleed badly from his right temple. Diaz was landing jabs at will. Diaz hurt him with a left hook and McGregor started to back peddle. Diaz pressed forward and started landing big shots. Diaz clinched with him at 1:47 and landed several big shots. McGregor started throwing wild shots and then all hell broke loose. McGregor shot in for a takedown at 1:08 and Diaz went for a choke, but McGregor got out. Diaz got mount and started blitzing him and then got back mount and locked in the rear-naked choke for the win.

Women’s bantamweight title bout: Holly Holm (10-0) vs. Miesha Tate (17-5)

Round 1: Tate was cautious early in this round. Tate caught a kick at 3:32 and landed a hook. Holm landed a side kick to the body at 1:40. Tate’s left eye was red and started to swell up at this point.

Round 2: Tate ducked a punch and got a takedown at 4:29 into side control. Tate moved to half guard and started to land some elbows. Holm tried to get off her back, but Tate stayed on her and landed some big elbows to the body. Tate transitioned to back mount at 1:35 and landed some big strikes. Tate went for a choke and locked it in. However, Holm got out of it to end the round.

Round 3: Holm landed a head kick at 3:56. Holm landed a straight right at 3:10. Tate was calm and keeping her range. Tate went for a takedown at 2:42, but couldn’t get it. They exchanged widely to end the uneventful round.

Round 4: Tate caught the leg and went for a takedown about a minute into the round, but was stuffed. Holm clinched with her up against the fence and landed some knees to the body. They separated at 3:35. Tate pressed her late in the round and went for a takedown, but was stuffed. Holm with a front face kick with 20-seconds left and they exchange to the bell.

Round 5: Tate started using some kicks in this round. Holm’s range was a storyline in this fight. She started to pick Tate a part on the feet at this point with not only strikes but kicks. Tate went for a takedown at 3:53, but was shoved off. Tate clinched with her at 3:11, but Holm landed some big knees. Tate got a takedown with two minutes to go and got her back. Holm stood up as Tate locked in a rear-naked choke for the win.

Result: Miesha Tate def. Holly Holm via technical submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 5, 3:30

Light heavyweight bout: Gian Villante (14-6) vs. Ilir Latifi (11-4, 1NC)

Round 1: Latifi went for an early round takedown, but was stuffed. Latifi caught a kick and landed a straight right. Latifi then clinched with him up against the fence at 2:45. Latifi with combos and separated at 2:18. They exchanged to the bell.

Round 2: Villante started to let his kicks go in this round and was backing Latifi up with them. Villante with a leg kick, but it was caught, and Latifi slammed him down at 3:36 and got his back. Villante got back up at 3:00 and they went back to striking. Villante clinched with him at 3:38. Latifi got a takedown with 13-seconds left, and Villante got right back to his feet.

Round 3: Latifi got a takedown at 3:40, but Villante got back to his feet right away. Latifi missed a huge punch at 2:54. Not a ton of action in this fight. Villante landed a big uppercut with two minutes left in the round. Latifi got a big takedown with 30-seconds left in the fight.

Result: Ilir Latifi def. Gian Villante via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Light heavyweight bout: Corey Anderson (8-1) vs. Tom Lawlor (9-5, 1NC)

Round 1: Lawlor with a left hook and Anderson was stunned. Lawlor tried to land some big shots and does. Lawlor presses the action. Anderson was firing back as well. Anderson recovered moments later. Anderson tagged him with back-to-back strikes at 1:58. Anderson tagged him again with a left hook with 30-seconds left. They exchanged to the bell.

Round 2: Lawlor with a takedown 10-seconds into the round, but Anderson got right back to his feet. Lawlor landed a straight left at 4:08 and stunned him. Anderson back peddled and recovered. Anderson was using more kicks in this round. Anderson got a combo going late in the round. Lawlor hurt him with a combo and Anderson fired back. Lawlor clinched with him to end the round. A close round.

Round 3: Lawlor landed a good combo to begin the round. Anderson got a double-leg takedown at 3:52 into side control. Anderson was landing some elbows while he transitioned into guard. They were stood up at 1:12. They exchanged to the bell.

Result: Corey Anderson def. Tom Lawlor via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Women’s bantamweight bout: Amanda Nunes (11-4) vs. Valentina Shevchenko (12-1)

Round 1: Nunes opens up the round with a kick. Both girls were very hesitant early in this round. Shevchenko landed a head kick at 3:07. Nunes was throwing a lot of strikes in volume and was missing most of them. Nunes clinches and got a trip takedown with 45-seconds left in the round. She was in guard and landed some elbows. Shevchenko got to her feet with seconds left in the round.

Round 2: Shevchenko shot in for a takedown at 4:05, but Nunes stuffed it and got on top in guard. Nunes then began to land some big punches and elbows late in the round. Shevchenko tried to get up at 1:54, but was dragged down to the ground. Nunes got her back with under a minute to go and went for a neck crank. Shevchenko was bleeding from her temple. Shevchenko scrambled to top and ended the round that way.

Round 3: Nunes clinched, but ate a knee to the face. Shevchenko took her down at 4:29 and got side control. Shevchenko landed a series of elbows. Nunes pushed her off and got back to her feet at 3:22. Shevchenko clinched with her at 2:22 and landed a series of punches.

Result: Amanda Nunes def. Valentina Shevchenko via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-27)

Preliminary Card: (FS1 – 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT)

Welterweight bout: Brandon Thatch (11-3) vs. Siyar Bahadurzada (21-6-1)

Round 1: Bahadurzada was throwing a lot of quick, powerful punches early. Thatch clinched with him at 3:02 and landed some knees to the body. Bahadurzada with a good combo as well as Thatch. Thatch landed a spinning elbow and then some knees while in the clinch. Thatch got a takedown at 1:40 and went for a guillotine choke, which he didn’t get. Bahadurzada landed some big shots on top to end the round.

Round 2: Bahadurzada got a big takedown at 4:38 and into guard. They were stood up at 2:40. Bahadurzada landed a big head kick right away. Bahadurzada clinched and landed some big knees. Bahadurzada took him down at 2:10. Thatch looked exhausted.

Round 3: Bahadurzada tagged him with a straight right then took him down at 4:15 and landed a series of big strikes from the top. Thatch scrambled to his feet at 2:45. Thatch tried to mount a comeback, but it was little to late. Bahadurzada took him down late in the round and locked in a side choke for the win.

Welterweight bout: Erick Silva (18-6, 1NC) vs. Nordine Taleb (10-3)

Round 1: A slow start to the round. Silva started to let go midway through the round. Taleb hurts his right ankle in this round. Taleb took him down at 1:40 and landed some hammer fists. Silva got right back to his feet. Silva faked a fist bump and jabbed him in the face. Silva missed a head kick, and Taleb lit him up. Silva went for a late round takedown but was shrugged off.

Round 2: Taleb caught a leg kick and landed a straight cross to shut Silva’s lights out.

Result: Nordine Taleb def. Erick Silva knockout (punches) – Round 2, 1:34

Middleweight bout: Vitor Miranda (11-4) vs. Marcelo Guimaraes (9-1-1)

Round 1: Miranda comes out and clinches right away with him. Guimaraes shoots for a takedown and got it at 3:45. He pressed him up against the fence and worked him over with strikes. Miranda got up at 3:10. Guimaraes clinches with him again and lands some good shots.

Round 2: Guimaraes comes out on fire and was landing some big shots. He then clinched with him and put him up against the fence. Miranda rocked Guimaraes with a series of elbows then a head kick and the fight was over.

Result: Vitor Miranda def. Marcelo Guimaraes by TKO (strikes) at 1:09 of Round 2

Featherweight bout: Darren Elkins (19-5) vs. Chas Skelly (15-1)

Round 1: Skelly throws bombs to begin the round. Elkins clinched with him at 4:21 and puts him up against the fence. They separate moments later. Skelly stunned him with a straight right and then clinched with him at 3:21. Elkins tripped him and took him down. Skelly locked in a heel hook, but Elkins got out of it at 2:42. Elkins tries to battle out of it with strikes and does at 2:16. They got to their feet and Elkins hit a series of kicks while in the clinch. They separate at 2:00. Skelly clinched him, but ate a series of knees.

Round 2: Skelly took him down at 3:45, but Elkins hustled and got on top moments later in guard. Elkins with some good ground and pound. Complete domination by Elkins in this round.

Round 3: Elkins comes out and clinches with him right away. He got him down at 4:16 and got his back. Skelly scrambled to his feet moments later. Elkins clinched him again and landed a series of knees. Elkins with a trip takedown at 3:35. Elkins went for a choke, but didn’t finish it and Skelly got to his feet at 2:45. Elkins landed a big strike after that. Elkins picked him up and slammed him at 1:57. Elkins got his back and landed some big strikes. Skelly got to his feet at 1:23.

Result: Darren Elkins def. Chas Skelly via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-26 29-27) R3, 5:00

Preliminary Card: (UFC Fight Pass – 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m PT)

Lightweight bout: Diego Sanchez (25-8) vs. Jim Miller (25-7, 1NC)

Round 1: Sanchez comes out and starts brawling. Things calm down about a minute into the round. Sanchez took him down at 2:15 with a double leg and got guard. Sanchez pressed him up against the fence and worked him over with strikes for the rest of the round.

Round 2: Miller dropped him with a leg kick 30-seconds into the round. Sanchez landed a knee strike to the head at 3:32. Miller started to let his hands go in this round. Miller threw a body kick at 3:13, but Sanchez caught it and got the takedown. Sanchez in half guard on top up against the fence. Miller scrambled to his feet at 2:32. Miller landed a head kick at 1:36 and then pressed forward. Sanchez with a spinning back kick. Sanchez landed an elbow at 1:18 and then clinched with him. Sanchez went for a takedown, but Miller stuffed it and went for a guillotine choke with 30-seconds left to go. Miller couldn’t get it, but did land some good knees. Sanchez shot in for a takedown with 10-seconds to go but was stuffed.

Round 3: Miller lands a good left hand right out of the gate. Both kept the fight on the feet and was swinging for the fences. Miller slowed down midway through the round and Sanchez was picking him apart. Miller got a brief takedown with a minute to go, but Sanchez got back to his feet. They brawled to the finish.

Result: Diego Sanchez def. Jim Miller via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Lightweight bout: Justin Salas (12-6) vs. Jason Saggo (10-2)

Round 1: Both men exchanges leg kicks to begin the round. Salas took him down with a double leg at 3:30. He got into guard on top and worked him over with strikes. Saggo went for a submission, but then let it go and scrambled to top position at 2:39. Saggo transitioned into side control at 2:03. Saggo transitioned to back mount at 1:05 and worked him over with shots to finish the fight.

Result: Jason Saggo def. Justin Salas via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 4:31

Featherweight bout: Julian Erosa (15-2) vs. Teruto Ishihara (7-2-2)

Round 1: Ishihara kicks right after the touch of the gloves. Erosa dropped him with a leg kick. Ishihara tripped him and took him down. He got the back at 4:10, but Erosa got back to his feet right away. Erosa with an inside leg kick at 3:22. Erosa faked a low kick and hit a high kick, which knocked down Ishihara. Ishihara got right back to his feet. Erosa clinched with him at 1:22 and put him up against the fence. Ishihara separated with 35-seconds left and started blasting Erosa with punches. Erosa took him won seconds later and ends the round in top position.

Round 2: Ishihara caught him with a left-hand 30-seconds into the round and finished him on the ground.

Result: Teruto Ishihara def. Julian Erosa via knockout (punches) – Round 2, 0:34
