Splitting Up The Wyatt Family — Is It Too Soon?

Over the last few weeks on WWE RAW, vignettes have been airing that alludes to the fact that The Wyatt Family will be splitting up and going their separate ways in the near future. Subsequently, reports have surfaced online that suggests the same thing.

Assuming that is the plan, one has to question whether or not this is the appropriate time to split the group apart. Personally speaking, I think it’s a bit too soon to break up the last remaining legitimate faction in WWE. On the flip-side of the coin, however, I thought The Shield breaking up when they did was too soon as well and thus far, it’s worked out pretty well.

When you compare The Shield breaking up to The Wyatt Family, you have to consider one key factor — each member of The Shield, individually speaking, had a lot of promise. So, when the time came to pull the trigger, it was pretty likely that each member would succeed. With The Wyatt Family, however, that is not the case. At least not in my opinion.

When you look at each member of The Wyatt Family individually, one particular member of the group stands out, from a negative point-of-view. That, of course, is Erick Rowan.

Sure, he’s got the sheep mask and a wicked-awesome giant red beard, but beyond those character traits and the fact that his ring gear is similar to that of 1990s “cartoon era” character Duke “The Dumpster” Droese, what does he bring to the table on his own?

As part of The Wyatt Family, Rowan is just another freaky-looking big dude to help make up the three members needed for the group to be considered a faction, which as everyone knows, is a band of three or more members. On his own, however, he has zero personality. I’m not even sure I can recall a single time in history, on WWE television, that he has uttered a single word, or done anything to separate himself from the pack.

Bray Wyatt is Bray Wyatt, obviously he’ll be fine. Luke Harper is this generation’s Bruiser Brody, or even JBL, with his similar “clothesline from hell” spot in matches. He’s even had his swings at the plate in terms of promo work and quite honestly, does pretty good when given chances to advance his character from a verbal standpoint.

That Rowan, however …yeah, I’m worried about that Rowan.

There’s been talk of having one of the top NXT tag-teams — The Ascension — join Bray as his new running buddies. Personally, I think that’s a mistake. If you’re going to split up The Wyatt Family, I think the main thing that needs to happen is for Bray Wyatt to establish his own individual identity. Having two new guys running around with him pretty much just creates a new — likely weaker — version of The Wyatt Family.

Another thing that is interesting about a potential Wyatt Family split is how WWE creative decides who is going to be a babyface and who is going to be a heel. It seems pretty obvious that Bray should become a face, Harper should become a heel and Rowan, well, I have no idea what they are going to do with him.

Going back to The Shield comparisons, it seemed obvious that if that group was going to break apart and go their separate ways, that Dean Ambrose would be the first to turn heel. WWE decided to throw a curve ball, however, and went with Seth Rollins as the heel.

In hindsight, I think that was an excellent decision, to turn Rollins and align him with the top act in the company, The Authority, as it guaranteed that he would be viewed as a top player, whereas without being lumped in with The Authority, Rollins faced the possibility of becoming the Erick Rowan of that situation, as everyone knew Roman Reigns was going to get the shove from management and everyone knew that Dean Ambrose was going to do just fine on his own.

Rollins was the wild card and because WWE went against the grain and did what they did with him, he’s got a very bright future ahead of him, especially because he has the talent, particularly in the ring, to back it up. Jumping back to The Wyatt Family, I’m wondering if history will repeat itself and WWE will decide to focus heavily on Rowan, knowing that Wyatt and Harper have what it takes to fly on their own.

I guess only time will tell and maybe it’s even a bit premature to analyze the possibility of The Wyatt Family breaking up, but it seems pretty obvious that we’re headed in that direction. If WWE does indeed break apart the group, what do you guys think of each member’s chances of success? How would you handle The Wyatt Family members as individuals?
