Hi folks! Today, we are looking at the 25 longest reigning ROH Champions in history. With the news of AEW’s Tony Khan buying Ring of Honor, this felt like the time to look back on those names who carried the promotion for the past twenty years.

It might surprise you to see some names who didn’t make it, and that’s only because they didn’t hold their titles for long enough. I made the cutoff point 325 days, which means every champion has held their respective championship (not always across one reign) for almost a year.

Note: In the middle of making this, I noticed Vincent is a four time 6-man tag champion for 390+ days, and the tally is increasing because he’s currently champion with The Righteous. He would have gone between Jay Briscoe & The Young Bucks. His first three reigns were with The Kingdom’s Matt Taven & TK O’Ryan.

#25. ROH World Champion – Kevin Steen (328 Days)

Before going by the name Kevin Owens, Kevin Steen was one of the most ruthless and vocal commodities of Ring of Honor. He spent his early years teaming with El Generico (now known as Sami Zayn), before turning heel by betraying his best friend. Behind the scenes, they remained best friends, but on camera they began a heated rivalry with a storyline, which Steen wrote. After a year long feud, it would come to a head at Final Battle 2010, which saw El Generico put his mask against Steen’s career. Kevin was unsure of the stipulation, because he stood to lose money by not being booked. However, by losing, he knew it would help El Generico get toward main event status, so he agreed to the stipulation.

Ring of Honor was struggling financially, and Steen had serious issues with the booker Jim Cornette. Despite reports that Jim Cornette stopped the mask vs. career match being the main event, it went on last as an unsanctioned match after the World Championship encounter between Roderick Strong & Davey Richards. While Steen was away, Cary Silkin kept paying him, but ROH was in transition. Sinclair Broadcast Group would buy it, and with Cornette messing Steen around by apparently “freezing” him out, it took many months for Steen to return.

He returned over six months after losing to Generico, looking for redemption for being screwed out of a contract. Cornette & Steen butted heads on and off-screen in a feud resembling real-life tensions. They had different creative minds, and while Steen was supposed to be the heel, the fans were cheering him over Cornette. Steen got back in to wrestling again at the end of December 2011. After a run of victories, Steen defeated Davey Richards at Border Wars 2012 to become the ROH World Champion. He turned heel shortly after, and allied with the guys he had been feuding with in Jimmy Jacobs & Steve Corino. Steen spent the next year defending his title against many challengers, including:

Eddie Edwards, Davey Richards, Mike Mondo, Homicide, Eddie Kingston, Rhino, Rhett Titus, Jay Lethal, Michael Elgin, Mike Bennett, El Generico, Tadarius Thomas & Mark Briscoe.

Steen lost the ROH title to Jay Briscoe in April 2013. He remained with the company until July 2014, before signing a WWE contract and reporting to its developmental system the following month.

#24. ROH Pure Champion – Nigel McGuinness (350 Days)

Nigel McGuinness is the longest reigning in the history of the ROH Pure Championship. To get it, he defeated Samoa Joe in mid-2005, which was roughly six months after Joe had lost his World Championship. McGuinness changed the style of ROH by bringing technical British wrestling to the forefront. He was the first to use an iron to win his matches, and he developed a gimmick of purposely mispronouncing words to rile up the crowd. Although he had a long feud with Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro), the most memorable rivalry was with ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson.

After two matches for their titles ended in controversy, they booked a unification match in Liverpool, England, under pure rules. McGuinness lost the title to Danielson, and it was retired. After coming up short in a World Championship match against Danielson, he handed McGuinness the Pure Championship as a trophy, showing the utmost respect for what he did to make it mean something.

#23. ROH World Champion – Jay Briscoe (375 Days)

Jay Briscoe is a two-time champion, having defeated Kevin Steen in 2013 and Michael Elgin in 2014. He’s unique because he spent much of his ROH career teaming with his brother Mark, so winning the ROH World Championship showed he could be more. As seen above, Jay is also one of a few champions in having their own belt design.

In his time across both reigns, he defended it against: Mark Briscoe, Adam Cole, BJ Whitmer, Davey Richards, Eddie Edwards, Matt Hardy, Mike Bennett, ACH, Matt Taven, Michael Elgin, Hanson, Tommaso Ciampa, Jimmy Jacobs, Silas Young & Samoa Joe

Since losing the title to Kyle O’Reilly in 2015, he has struggled to get back to the top. Instead, he reunited with his brother and returned to the tag team division.

#21 & 22. ROH World Tag Team Champions – The Young Bucks (399 Days)

The Young Bucks are one of only three teams who have won the tag titles 3 or more times, but they had to earn it. We know Matt & Nick Jackson have won many championships around the world, but it took them almost five years after their ROH debut to get this one. For AEW fans, it may be interesting to know they got their first by defeating reDRagon, but lost it back to them 70 days later. They have history, which explains why they find it difficult to work together.

We should also know that they only ever won the ROH Tag Titles as members of Bullet Club. In 2014 and again in 2016, they held the ROH World, PWG World, and IWGP Junior Tag Team Championships simultaneously. They lost their other two reigns to The Hardy Boys and Motor City Machine Guns. The Young Bucks may go down as the biggest cross promotional tag team in ROH history.

#18-20. ROH 6-Man Tag Team Champions – The Mexisquad (406 Days*)

*Likely not the exact number, as the end of their reign cannot be confirmed.

A more recent record was set by the team of The Mexisquad, comprising Flamita (left), Bandido (center) and Rey Horus (right). The six-man tag team championship has only been around since late-2016, but has delivered some solid encounters in its short time. Mexisquad’s rise came about around the same time as Rush won the World Championship, meaning four of ROH’s champions were Mexican born.

After Mexisquad lost the title to Shane Taylor Promotions, Bandido set his sights on the ROH World Championship. Flamita turned on Bandido & Rey Horus and changed his name to Demonic Flamita. In July 2021, Bandido defeated Rush to become a double World Champion, as he was also holding Pro Wrestling Guerilla’s World title.

#17. ROH World Champion – Austin Aries (419 Days)

Back when Austin Aries wasn’t so controversial, he was known as one of the best technical wrestlers in the world. He set records during his time, including stopping the dominant reign of Samoa Joe to become the promotion’s fourth World Champion in 2004. After losing the title to CM Punk, he kept trying, and eventually became ROH’s only (at that point) two-time World Champion in 2009 by defeating Jerry Lynn (c) and Tyler Black, known to most as Seth Rollins.

Aries’ combined success in Ring of Honor and TNA Impact Wrestling got him a WWE contract in 2016. Yet, his work on NXT and 205 Live did not get him far, and was released in mid-2017, with reports saying he wasn’t well-liked backstage by writers and others. Aries confirmed he was frustrated, and the writers had nothing for him in 2019. The “Greatest Man That Ever Lived” currently works for NWA and Control Your Narrative.

Why is he controversial? Aries has made some questionable choices in the past. During an episode of Impact, Christy Hemme botched his & Robert Roode’s entrance. Frustrated, Aries cornered her in the ring and got up on the turnbuckle, getting seriously close to putting his crotch on her face. Hemme didn’t approve, and Aries was in hot bother. Years later, he revealed a statement in an email that management was supposed to send out to clear his name. This is what Christy Hemme said:

“Actually, to clear up a few things about that, I am not a victim and NEVER felt sexually harassed. Big difference between sexual harassment and his actions. Live TV is like Live TV and we need to make quick decisions in the moment. I am a strong enough woman that makes it very clear what is and is not ok with me.

As my own personal boundary, if that was a storyline that was presented, I would have said no. Not acceptable. I made that clear. When he and I spoke, he was apologetic and very gracious about the whole thing. I have a great deal of respect for him, in and out of the business. Even more after this.”

Aries was also controversial on his way out of Impact Wrestling on his last run. At Bound For Glory 2018, after losing the World Championship to Johnny Impact (Morrison), he no-sold the finish, flipped off the crowd and Don Callis and walked out. He apparently suffered a concussion during their match, which contributed to his actions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Aries was accused of sexual misconduct by two women. He was also critical of wearing masks, to the point he spread disinformation about the vaccine. Aries would actively encourage a gimmick where fans would break social distancing while wearing tinfoil hats during signings. He did this in an extremely sarcastic manner to make light of the pandemic, while at the same time using it as a marketing ploy to get fans to his signings.

There was a time when Austin Aries was praised as one of the best technical wrestlers in the world. His Impact World title victory at Destination X is a huge moment in the promotions history. Yet his legacy in Ring of Honor and beyond has been tarnished, and it’s hard to say if fans will ever look at him the same.

During his time as Ring of Honor World Champion, before losing it to CM Punk, Aries defended it against: Samoa Joe, Colt Cabana, Homicide, James Gibson, Alex Shelley, Bryan Danielson & Spanky (Brian Kendrick).

#15 & 16. ROH World Tag Team Champions – Kings of Wrestling (433 Days)

What many may not know, is that the Kings of Wrestling was once a large stable in Chikara, including names like Icarus, Sara Del Ray, Arik Cannon, Chuck Taylor, Chris Hero (aka Kassius Ohno) and Claudio Castagnoli (aka Cesaro). It began in 2005, when Chikara invaded Ring of Honor. Soon enough, only Hero & Castagnoli remained, and they focused on becoming tag team champions.

The team achieved this in September 2006 by defeating Austin Aries & Roderick Strong, but only held it for 70 days. Their second reign was more lucrative, but they had to wait until April 2010. During The Big Bang(!), the Kings of Wrestling defeated The Briscoe Brothers to become two-time champs, beginning a reign which lasted over a year. They lost out to Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Hass & Benjamin) the following April, but by then, they had proved their worth as one of the best tag teams in ROH history.

Despite working in the same company for years as Kassius Ohno & Cesaro, they rarely crossed paths. In 2012, they worked and lost an NXT dark match against WWE Champion CM Punk and NXT Champion Seth Rollins. Six years later, again at an untelevised event, Cesaro helped Ohno to fend off the Undisputed Era. They celebrated in the ring, which was the only opportunity the Kings of Wrestling had in WWE. Now they have both left the company, it is possible they could reunite down the road.

#13 & 14. ROH World Tag Team Champions – The Foundation (436 Days*)

*Likely not the exact number, as the end of their reign cannot be confirmed.

It won’t be the last time we talk about Jay Lethal. He and Jonathan Gresham held the titles well over a year, from the end of 2019 to the early months of 2021, but didn’t actually join The Foundation until November 2020. Because of the pandemic, it’s safe to say that Lethal & Gresham had it easier because ROH was not running shows between March & July, and rarely after that. I can only find four title defenses, but there could have been more.

This win made Jay Lethal the third ROH Grand Slam Champion, and he is now contracted to AEW. Jonathan Gresham is the current ROH World Champion. At “ROH Final Battle 2021 – End of an Era”, he defeated his former tag team partner for the vacated title on what was the last PPV before ROH ceased operation.

#12. ROH World Champion – Adam Cole (445 Days)

It’s story time with Adam Cole, bay bay! A young Cole spent much of his early career in a tag team called Future Shock with Kyle O’Reilly. In 2012, he broke away from the team and branched out as a singles star, winning the ROH TV Championship. After losing the title in March 2013, ROH noticed his potential and began pushing him in the main event scene. Just before renewing his contract, Cole unsuccessfully challenged Jay Briscoe for the World title.

Leading up to Death Before Dishonor, ROH held a tournament to crown a new champion, because Jay Briscoe had vacated. At the PPV, Cole defeated Michael Elgin to claim his first world title, and then turned heel by attacking Elgin & Briscoe. This began a reign of 275 days, in which The Kingdom, a stable he founded and lead, helped him. He lost out to Michael Elgin in June, but his story doesn’t end there. Fast forward to 2016 at the Death Before Dishonor three years after winning his first, Cole defeated Jay Lethal to claim it for a second time. This was important because he had joined the Bullet Club, so he brought another World Championship to the popular faction.

Former tag team partner Kyle O’Reilly immediately targeted him. The pair fought hard over the ROH World title all the way to December, when Kyle defeated Cole. At New Japan’s Wrestle Kingdom 11 in early 2017, Cole regained the title from O’Reilly. The win made history twice, because it was the first time the title changed hands outside America, but also made Cole the first three-time ROH World Champion. This record has still not been beaten, and will never be beat if we only include the years before Tony Khan’s ownership.

The cool thing about Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly is they reformed as a team in NXT, in a faction called Undisputed Era. They became tag team champions together, but it soon turned sour when O’Reilly felt he was deserving of a NXT title run. Cole got jealous of O’Reilly’s success and disbanded the group to do everything in his power to stop him. When Cole left NXT, it looked like they wouldn’t reunite, but funnily enough, both O’Reilly & Bobby Fish left WWE and signed with AEW. Once again, starting their time in a new company together, it seems like we’re destined for another epic feud between Cole & O’Reilly down the road, with Fish having no choice but to step back.

#11. ROH World Champion – Bryan Danielson (462 Days)

Bryan Danielson may be the greatest technical wrestler of this generation, and it’s hard to argue otherwise. Long before Team Hell No’s and “Yes!” chants, Bryan Danielson was the “American Dragon”, and there was nothing soft about him. Danielson was, and still is, an absolutely brutal performer. His stamina and submission game is hard to contend with. In his ROH days, only a handful of guys could go hold-for-hold with Danielson.

I remember watching “The Wrestling Channel”, which was a 24/7 broadcast in the UK. This is where I first saw Danielson in a regularly aired video package during advert breaks (which I sadly can’t find it), along with many others. By the time he got to WWE, his reputation preceded him. I knew enough about ROH to know the significance of his signing, and it was frustrating to see WWE treat him like a rookie.

After beating James Gibson (aka Jamie Noble) for the World Championship in September 2005, Danielson began a staggering 462 day reign. In this time, he set a record of 39 defenses not just against ROH wrestlers, but against stars from other promotions. He also defeated Nigel McGuiness to become the Pure Champion, which we talked about earlier. Danielson set the bar for what a champion could be. Here’s as many wrestlers I can find who he retained against:

Austin Aries, Steve Corino, Roderick Strong, Chris Sabin, Christopher Daniels, Rocky Romero, Naomichi Marufuji, Chris Hero, AJ Styles, Xavier, Jimmy Rave, Alex Shelley, Lance Storm, Colt Cabana, Delirious, Jimmy Yang, Homicide, Sonjay Dutt, Nigel McGuinness, Samoa Joe, SUWA & KENTA.

After losing the title to Homicide in December 2006, he took time off to heal his shoulder. He spent the next two years working in ROH and the independents, notably picking up the PWG World Championship twice. By 2009, his ROH contract expired, and he signed with WWE.

#10. ROH World Champion – Nigel McGuinness (545 Days)

While Danielson took more of a back seat in his last two years, Nigel McGuiness stepped up in October 2007 and won the ROH World Championship from Takeshi Morishima. This began a mammoth 545 day reign, which is the second longest in the title’s history. Despite picking up injuries, McGuinness was allowed to keep the title, and his recovery time rarely took long.

As a Brit, I could not be more proud of what McGuinness accomplished in his prime. It’s sad that he had to retire after contracting Hepatitis B, which he said he does not know how that was possible. He campaigned for wrestling to have Hepatitis B vaccines, and to cut down on intentional blood loss. Luckily for him, he could land a job as a commentator, and to this day he is still working for WWE on its NXT UK brand.

McGuinness is one of the greatest World Champions in ROH history. Much like Danielson, he wasn’t afraid of regularly defending it. Here’s some of those names who failed to take him out:

Jay Briscoe, Chris Hero, Austin Aries, Go Shiozaki, Roderick Strong, Bryan Danielson, Tyler Black, Larry Sweeney, Erick Stevens, Kevin Steen, Claudio Castagnoli, BJ Whitmer, KENTA, Keith Myatt, Lionheart, Ruckus, El Generico, Jimmy Jacobs, Jerry Lynn, Naomichi Marufuji & D’Lo Brown.

On his 39th defense, McGuinness lost the title to Jerry Lynn, leaving him one short of Danielson’s record. After telling ROH that WWE had agreed to a contract in principle, it fell through because he failed a pre-screen testing because of an old biceps injury. Instead, he signed with TNA and was renamed Desmond Wolfe, where he had some classic matches in a feud with Kurt Angle. Sadly, that was the height of his TNA career, before he spiraled down the card and was eventually released in 2011.

#9. ROH World Champion – Rush (575 Days)

Rush is a two-time ROH World Champion, who spent much of his longest reign waiting on the sidelines because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In his first reign, he defended it twice before losing it to PCO. Upon getting it back in February, he only held it a month before ROH ceased producing shows.

Rush did not wrestle until December, meaning the World Champion had to wait 9 months to compete (he defeated Brody King). In 2021, Rush defended against Jay Lethal and Shane Taylor, before his countrymen, Bandido, defeated him in June. It might be one of the most lackluster reigns in the title’s history, but it’s not his fault the world entered a pandemic.

#8. ROH World TV Champion – Dragon Lee/Ryu Lee (602 Days)

Dragon Lee, otherwise known as Ryu Lee in Japan, is the second longest reigning TV Champion in company history. His first reign came about by defeating Shane Taylor, which began a 469 day reign from December 2019 to March 2021. Yes, much like stablemate Rush, Dragon Lee had to sit back and wait for his opportunities to defend the title. I can find five title defenses in that time, although there could have been more, which isn’t bad considering the circumstances.

After losing it to Tracy Williams, he proved it wasn’t a onetime thing by regaining it in July. The title reign was a nifty 133 days before losing it to Dalton Castle. However, I can only see one defense in that time, so a minimum of six defenses across 602 days means an average of one defense every hundred days. That’s over three months. Again, it wasn’t his fault, but we should highlight pandemic champions like anyone else.

#7. ROH World Champion – Samoa Joe (645 Days)

Over one reign, nobody is on the level of Samoa Joe, who went undefeated for 21 months. Before him, ROH had champions in Low Ki and Xavier, but it was Joe who put the title on the map. There was something about his performances which drew fans to Ring of Honor, and any champion who followed had to live up to the standard he set between 2003-2004.

With 29 successful title defenses, he didn’t compete as often as Bryan Danielson or Nigel McGuinness, but the company was young and they probably didn’t run as many shows. He was also working the independents, so he couldn’t always be around. Joe helped to spread the word that Ring of Honor was here to stay, which is arguably more important than the amount of title defenses he had.

He was a complete wrecking ball and a near unstoppable force. Here is a list of Samoa Joe’s victims:

Colt Cabana, Matt Stryker, Tom Carter, Doug Williams, The Zebra Kid, Homicide, Dan Maff, Paul London, BJ Whitmer, Christopher Daniels, Jay Briscoe, Mark Briscoe, AJ Styles, Balls Mahoney, Low Ki, CM Punk, Trent Acid, Bryan Danielson, & Rocky Romero.

Some might think, why isn’t CM Punk on this list? Well, I have to tell you that Punk only held the ROH World title for 55 days, making him one of the shortest reigning in company history. However, his rise to fame can be attributed to Samoa Joe. In a three match series, CM Punk never defeated Joe, but it became a legendary series, so much so that their second encounter became the best-selling DVD. The Wrestling Observer gave it a 5-star rating. Despite never beating him, Samoa Joe got CM Punk over in the best way imaginable.

Another match I have to mention is Samoa Joe’s encounter with Kenta Kobashi. If you ever have time to check that out? I most definitely recommend it.

#5 & 6. ROH World Tag Team Champions – reDRagon (672 Days)

Kyle O’Reilly is unique because he appears on both ROH & NXT lists as one of the longest reigning tag team champions. Before there was such a thing as Undisputed Era, O’Reilly & Bobby Fish dominated ROH. They are three time champions with the second longest overall reign, defeating the likes of The Briscoe Brothers, The American Wolves, and The Young Bucks to get there.

2013 to 2015 was most definitely their period of success. They didn’t just stop there, reDRagon also became two-time IWGP Junior Tag Team Champions. After signing with WWE in 2017, their stable won the NXT Tag Team Championship three times. Wherever reDRagon goes, they claim gold, so it’s only a matter of time until they do the same in AEW. Unless Kyle O’Reilly has bigger aspirations and goes solo again? I guess it depends how long he wants to stay in Adam Cole’s shadow.

#3 & 4. ROH World Champion & World TV Champion – Jay Lethal (707/796 Days)

Jay Lethal was a mid-card act in TNA Wrestling, often wrestling in either the X-Division or in a tag team. He was crazy charismatic, with plenty of evidence pointing to his potential as a main event player. For whatever reason, TNA management didn’t see it in him, so he returned to Ring of Honor in 2011. Did they reward him right away? Hell no. Lethal had to work harder than he ever had before to prove he was main event material. After winning the TV Championship in August, Lethal felt he was better than that. By 2012, he was challenging the World Champion Davey Richards, and then Kevin Steen, but kept falling short.

Then he lost the TV title to Roderick Strong, and things were looking bleak. Lethal had to reach the next level. He spent the next two years trying to prove he deserved to be a champion. And he got back to where he was, as the TV Champion for a second time, by defeating Tommaso Ciampa. This began a record 567 day reign for Lethal, in which he defended it against all comers, doubling the previous title defense record set by Matt Taven. Lethal was the undisputed TV Champion, so much so that he started saying he was the “real champion”.

In 2015, Lethal introduced a new belt which omitted the word “Television” from its description, and claimed it to be ROH’s top prize. Not being able to deny Lethal’s claim, it forced Nigel McGuinness to book a title vs. title match between Lethal and World Champion Jay Briscoe. Lethal defeated Briscoe and became Ring of Honor’s first double champion, and third Triple Crown Champion. By the end of 2015, he again lost the TV title to Roderick Strong, but it was fine. Lethal was still the World Champion.

When he lost the World title to Adam Cole in 2016, Lethal had to go back to the drawing board. He kept trying, but would fall short to Cole, Christopher Daniels, and Cody Rhodes. Lethal could beat Dalton Castle though, which he did in June 2018, proving that it wasn’t a one-off. He also set a new record of 41 title defenses, beating Bryan Danielson’s standard. Jay Lethal became so loyal to ROH that it legitimately shocked me to see his AEW debut. It took the company going on hiatus to get Lethal to go somewhere else, and fingers crossed, they won’t misuse his potential like Impact Wrestling did. Lethal is a star and should be treated that way.

#1 & 2. ROH World Tag Team Champions – The Briscoe Brothers (1,351+ Days)

Was there any doubt? Anyone who has ever watched Ring of Honor for an extended period will know there’s only one team which always finds its way back to the top. The Briscoe Brothers have been ROH mainstays since the very first show, so nobody is more loyal to the company than they are. With 12 Championship reigns, they are currently increasing their tally while Tony Khan figures out what he wants to do. They have suggested a match with FTR, which could be pretty interesting. Here’s a list of teams they have defeated to become ROH World Tag Team Champions:

  • Special K in November 2003
  • The Prophecy (BJ Whitmer & Dan Maff) in May 2004
  • Christopher Daniels & Matt Sydal in February 2007
  • Naruki Doi & Shingo in March 2007*
  • No Remorse Corps (Davey Richards & Rocky Romero) in April 2008
  • The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) in December 2009
  • Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Hass & Shelton Benjamin) in December 2011
  • S.C.U.M (Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs) in December 2012
  • The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) in March 2018
  • SoCal Uncensored (Kazarian & Scorpio Sky) in December 2018
  • Guerillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa) in July 2019
  • The OGK (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) in December 2021

*This was their longest single reign of 275 days through much of 2007.

That’s 18 years between their first reign and the twelfth! There are some noticeable gaps, like 2005-2006, and again from 2013 to 2018. The brothers haven’t always stayed together, but they always end up back together at some point. It will be interesting to see what Tony Khan does with the longest reigning champions in Ring of Honor history.

With that said, I hope you enjoyed what is a trip down memory lane, or a list giving you plenty of insight in to the history of ROH. I don’t claim to be a diehard fan. I watched when I could, but it’s really difficult to find here in the UK. There used to be wrestling streams that would have schedule it after Impact, so I regularly watched it until they stopped showing it. I hope Tony Khan can make ROH more visible, not just to American fans, but to wrestling fans from around the world. Thank you for reading!
