It’s been a while, but now it’s time for another installment of the ongoing eWN editorial series I call, “Backstage Fight Stories.” For those interested, here are the previous six installments:

  • Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart (read here)
  • Vince McMahon vs. Nailz (read here)
  • Sid Vicious vs. Arn Anderson (read here)
  • Scott Steiner vs. Diamond Dalas Page (read here)
  • JBL vs. Joey Styles (read here)
  • Vader vs. Paul Orndorff (read here)

Without further ado, let’s take a look at part seven. In this installment of the series, we’re going to look at the tale of one of the more well known backstage fight stories. As noted in the past, if you have heard of these stories before, there’s no need to ruin it for everyone else by commenting that these are common knowledge. Keep in mind that the wrestling business gains new fans on a daily basis, so some of these may be “old news” to you, many have never heard of them before. With that said, let’s take a look at the real-life triple-threat match between Vince McMahon, Kurt Angle and The Undertaker.

According to Kurt Angle’s autobiography, Vince McMahon once jokingly jumped him backstage and took him down to the ground. After doing so, McMahon apparently reminded Angle of this fact every chance he got. He made sure Angle, and anyone else who would listen, knew that McMahon was the only person in WWE to ever take down the Olympic gold medalist.

During one of the WWE airplane rides, Angle decided it was time to get his revenge. It was payback time. Unfortunately for Angle, things didn’t exactly go as planned.

As the story goes, Angle took McMahon down in the aisle of the plane. Because he did so, McMahon felt the need to jump on Angle every chance he got.

One of the times McMahon and Angle were mixing it up, their scuffle inadvertently woke up a sleeping Undertaker. Undertaker, not knowing the two were just clowning around, allegedly grabbed Angle from behind and put him in a choke. According to several eye-witnesses, Undertaker basically choked Angle unconscious.

Things apparently never escalated past this point. Undertaker was informed that the two were only joking around, and apologized to Angle and told him that he was just doing what any good employee would do. Angle, respecting Undertaker as the locker room leader, never retaliated.

So, there you have it. McMahon took Angle down when he wasn’t expecting it. Undertaker choked Angle out from behind when, again, he wasn’t expecting it. Oh yeah, and this kid named Daniel Puder once nearly ripped Angle’s arm off on live television when, you guessed it, Angle wasn’t expecting it. Or was he? We’ll tell that story, I’m sure, in another future edition of eWN’s “Backstage Fight Stories.”

Until then, leave your feedback in the “Comments” section below.
