During the December 24 edition of Monday Night RAW, Vince McMahon announced that 16-time world champion John Cena will make his return to both RAW and SmackDown Live.
The WWE took to Twitter and revealed that Cena will appear on both shows next week (December 31 and January 1st).
That said, it will be interesting to see what the Cenation leader will have to say and what plans the company has for him ahead of the 2019 Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania 35.
Cena has become a part-time wrestler in the past one or two years and has been making limited appearances either on TV or selected pay-per-views.
The multiple time champion has focused on his Hollywood career, while his latest film, Bumblebee, which was released earlier this month, has been successful so far.
With that in mind, Cena will likely be looking to work more on his career as an actor, rather than returning to the ring.
The 41-year-old wrestler has mentioned he may end his in-ring career soon, as there is nothing more he has to accomplish.
Cena hasn’t been seen in the main title picture over the past few months. As a result, I don’t see what plans the company may have for him at the Royal Rumble or Westlemania 35.
The only thing that can happen is for the company to have Cena challenge for the WWE Championship and win the title to surpass Ric Flair and make history as a 17-time world champion.
If that is the case, his title reign could be a short one and he would then have the chance to end his in-ring career and focus on his next film.
Aside from this, I don’t think there is any other plan for Cena that would actually make sense.
It has been reported that Cena will start filming his new movie from January 20th. In such a scenario, he will be unable to compete at both the Royal Rumble and the Wrestlemania 35.
So, there are not many paths the company can follow. If he will not make his return to the ring to fight for his 17th world title, then it might be better to not work these two events at all.
It is also likely the WWE will bring him back just for the ratings, which are very low especially on Monday Night RAW, so what a better way for the company to start the new year than having Cena appear on both shows.
One way or another, Cena’s return is highly anticipated and may reveal the plans (if any) the WWE has for him.
