Yes, it’s that time again. WWE’s annual “Spring Cleaning,” in which the WWE releases several of its underutilized main roster and developmental talents in order to make room for incoming talents, is suddenly fast approaching.
On June 12th, 2014, the WWE released eleven talents, including Teddy Long and Brodus Clay. The WWE would later release the likes of Josh Mathews and The Great Khali.
Which WWE main roster and NXT talents are expected to be released by the WWE when all is said and done? Let’s look at the leading candidates:
Stardust: The WWE almost always include a surprise release or two during spring cleaning and one of those names that comes to mind is Cody “Stardust” Rhodes. Since breaking up with Goldust last February, Stardust has been used as a comedy jobber losing to the likes of R-Truth and Dolph Ziggler. With the WWE focusing its attention to other heels such as Seth Rollins and Sheamus, look for the WWE to part ways with the “Grandson of a Plumber” after nine years.
Jack Swagger: Since turning face, the All-American American and former World Heavyweight Champion has rarely appeared on TV as of late and when he does, it’s usually either on Superstars or Main Event. Expect Swagger to be leaving the WWE very soon.
Fandango: Like Swagger, the former Johnny Curtis has also been used as an enhancement talent on shows like Main Event and Superstars and is rumored to be on his way out. Plus, the WWE has a very similar character in NXT by the name of Tyler Breeze.
Brad Maddox: Who?
Heath Slater: His 3MB bandmates, Jinder Mahal and Drew McIntyre, were let go last year and it won’t be too long for Slater joins his fellow teammates on the unemployment line.
Cameron: Her former Funkadactyls partner Naomi is becoming one of the top Divas on the main roster while the “Girl Bye” Diva is languishing in the bottom-tier of the Divas division.
Layla: At 37 years of age, Layla is one of the oldest Divas on the main roster but hasn’t been used much since she and Michelle McCool split up back in 2011. Expect the R-word to come up soon, as in retirement.
Scott Stanford: An announcer who has pretty much been taken a back seat since recent months.
Other candidates to be released: Zack Ryder, David Otunga, Rosa Mendes, The Ascension, Rich Brennan, Adam Rose, Zeb Colter, and Alex Riley.
The NXT roster will also be the target of releases as well. Expect the likes of several underutilized NXT talents such as Angelo Dawkins, Sylvester Lefort, Simon Gotch, Dash Wilder, Baron Corbin, Marcus Louis and Tye Dillinger to be let go, but I also expect Charlotte to be released as well. Even though she is one of the top Divas on the NXT roster, the daughter of Ric Flair has been held back from being promoted to the main roster by the Bella Twins and Paige. Don’t be surprised to be Charlotte be a top wrestler — as a possible TNA Knockout instead of a WWE Diva.
