Lucha Underground Quick Notes for Episode 2: 11/05/2014

Airing on El Rey and in Spanish on UniMás. Can’t find either channel? Do a search on your television for “Lucha Underground” and enjoy. Let’s not waste any more time…

The HIGHS:

The Formula – It looks like Mark Burnett, Robert Rodriguez, Chris DeJoseph and the rest of the team behind the scenes have found the perfect balance of story and action for today’s audience. The first two episodes have delivered just enough in-ring action to satisfy today’s fan and yet delivered attention-grabbing post-match vignettes which keep pushing each character arc along. Each match has carried a story along from episode one to episode two, and each story has escalated the stakes and fanned the flames. I’m ready to see what’s next for Prince Puma, Johnny Mundo, Mil Muertes, and even Chavo Guerrero. But the gold star? The run time. Let’s face it: who in today’s audience has two or three hours each week they can devote to any one wrestling product? But one hour of Lucha Underground? Works for me.

Chavo Guerrero – OK. I’m eating my words from last week. Chavo is definitely the most interesting Lucha Underground heel thus far. He may be 44 in age, but in ring with Blue Demon and some of the other veterans, Chavo is looking more like a 30-year-old on fire. He’s definitely wrestling with chips on both shoulders. Still past his prime, but still some of his best work in years.

Prince Puma – Color me interested. We have an apparently conflicted babyface who seems to be having doubts regarding his loyalty to his seemingly heel mentor Konnan. What will the emerging Lucha Heir do when his mentor pushes him past his conscience?

Konnan – I am waiting for the clash between mentor and apprentice, and I hope the folks behind Lucha Underground have taken the shackles off this talented and hilarious wrestling madman. Sure he can be an ominous legend-turned-manager, but he is also one helluva balls-out personality. We haven’t seen it on screen yet. Fingers crossed. Time will tell.

 MY CONCERNS:

Audio – Since there was very little in-ring mic work, it is hard to tell if last week’s audio issue still remains. Hopefully everything is just fine. Perhaps it was all in my head. We’ll see in weeks to come.

Matt Striker‘s Blue Demon – Could Lucha Underground please agree on one preferred way to pronounce this legend’s name? It doesn’t matter which is right. Please just pick one and stick with it.

Big Ryck & Company – Big Ryck had a great presence as he looked on from the stands as the rest of his crew took a beating. That said, I am still at a loss. I know Dario declared Big Ryck and company as his men. And I know they were just paid $100,000. And that should be enough motivation for the crew to run roughshod all over the Lucha Underground roster. But afterwards, I still hunger for a bigger reason to boo Dario’s men — besides beating down some babyfaces I just met last week. Again, I know a $100,000 gift from their boss should be enough, but as a viewer I found myself still wanting more depth to their characters. What else can they do? We’ll see.

Vampiro – I am sorry for bringing up the audio once again, but at times Vampiro’s commentary sounded like he had his mouth wrapped around his microphone. And other times his voice seemed too faint. I am not sure why I keep struggling to hear/understand him.

Prince Puma Vignette – The re-run of the Prince Puma clip felt a little out of place and quite unnecessary this week. It is still an excellent video package, but I am not sure why it ran after all of his in-ring work from this week. It felt like padding. Regardless, I would have preferred to have learned more about Konnan’s character motivation in its place.
