Sting Vs. Seth Rollins: Still Trying to Make Sense of the Whole Thing

As I sat through a 4 hour SummerSlam, I kept asking myself what direction would be coming next. Would Sting be a new member of the Wyatt Family? Would Kane come out as the demon and help his brother defeat the beast? Would John Cena break Ric Flair’s record? Was it time for Ambrose to turn heel?

Well as you all know, none of the above questions were answered leading SummerSlam to be a lackluster event at best. However, it wound up setting the table for one of the most exciting Raw’s we’ve seen in a long time. This was no Diva’s movement; this was an iconic moment including a historic wrestler. Sting made his surprise return on Monday Night and remains a marquee attraction in the wrestling world.

On Monday’s Raw, WWE unveiled Sting as the next challenger for Seth Rollins at the Night of Champions. The question I have is why? This isn’t Brock Lesnar; this is a 56 year old wrestler who has a lot of miles on his wheels. Does he really have enough left in the tank to make a WWE title run? That is if that’s the direction creative is headed for. The WWE brass could conceivably have him hold the title and make limited appearances until the Royal Rumble, where he could drop the belt to the Undertaker. This could then set up a rematch at WrestleMania 32, but this time for the WWE Championship. It all could equate to two legends making two 3 month title reigns in a six month span. Again, just pure seculation as I try to understand this whiole thing.

With the addition of Sting vs. Seth Rollins, WWE Night of Champions 2015 is suddenly a show gleaming with intrigue and another reason for people to buy the WWE Network. Just as Brock Lesnar’s presence elevated Battleground, Sting will do the same for Night of Champions. I am not saying this is the only reason for Sting’s involvement, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Night of Champions, which is poised to be filled with SummerSlam rematches, now, gets a match that has never happened before. That in itself is a huge selling point.

This was a major surprise and something it seems came into play late in the game. I am convinced that the plan was for Kane to feud with Rollins until the Rumble, but in the end they decided it wouldn’t garner many ratings. It also is a known fact that Rollins is the best wrestler they have on the roster and what better way to elevate his status even higher than to have him battle with one of the most heralded wrestlers in the game. John Cena and Seth Rollins put on a fantastic match, but after the rematch circus with Kevin Owens, I highly doubt another rematch feud would have been a scenario that would of held much interest.

We all were waiting for the marquee matchup between the Undertaker and Sting at WrestleMania 32, but in the end a matchup with Rollins can ultimately lead to a more action packed event. When you consider Rollins’ reputation for being one of the top sellers in the business and his promising youth, Sting will be working with an opponent who will be able to carry the match and make him look like a prime time specimen. In the end, Sting comes out looking supreme and Rollins may have very well supplanted a legacy.

Even considering Sting’s age and that he built his career outside of WWE, he still remains a marquee attraction and has wrestled just one match for the company. We are still at the point where every appearance still feels like major news.

Still as I sit here and type this article, I keep scratching my head as to why. I know there are some valid arguments, but why again is the WWE deciding to use a part-time wrestler as a could be champion. Doesn’t this stop the eventual momentum or take the spotlight away from a younger talent? It still makes me question why guys like Ziggler and Owens are stuck feuding with mid-card lifers. The whole process leads to fresh storylines, but with the same players. Thoughts?
