Styles vs. Cena Ushers in The New Era

As we look back on RAW this week, we can easily agree on what was undoubtedly the best moment of the night. Whether we agree or disagree with the direction, the AJ Styles turn, coinciding with the reincarnation of The Club, has been the most talked about segment within the wrestling circles. However, the segment could have been second page news if those Vaudevillains would have held their ground for just a few seconds longer and gave us a sneak peak at Stephanie getting ready to “Drop it Like its Hot.”

On a night that we all knew Mr. Cena would be coming back, WWE had to give us a slight swerve into another direction. As we sat back and listened to the thousands in attendance go back and forth with an epic Styles/Cena chant, we were suddenly submerged in a 3 on 1 ambushing of WWE’s golden boy by the corporation’s new edition. After weeks of babyface promos and indecisive moves, AJ Styles finally decided it was time to play in the band. Seth Rollins is back to reclaim his title and Kevin Owens, in my opinion, is on his way to win Money in the Bank. That all has left AJ Styles without a storyline; until now.

AJ Styles is a world class wrestler whose accomplishments speak for themselves. Having him be the leader of The Club gives him more steam towards a WWE run and also helps create a nWo-like storyline with Anderson and Gallows. Based upon the promo given earlier in the night where they both mentioned the “Taking Over” phrase, we could be witnessing an upcoming battle between the Club and the Shield that could be very entertaining.

Make no mistake about it, the Club will have a proper spot within the tag team division, but the main attraction will be Styles/Cena. Within the upcoming feud between the two, there will be the fans that will still cheer for AJ even though he is on the heel side of the ring. This is reminiscent of the CM Punk/John Cena program where the crowd reaction was epic and a constant sway back and forth for who would be the eventual favorite.

John Cena is a 15 time World Champion and may not have many years left in the business. He may have finally come to grips with the fact that his role will be to put people over while still being a main attraction for live events. The scary proposition for AJ Styles is that Cena rarely loses. However, in this case history may have to rewrite itself as we are dealing with an already accomplished wrestler who doesn’t need to be created.

Losing to Cena in the past hasn’t always had a positive outcome. Fans may look back to Bray Wyatt who was one of the most impressive and promising heels in the WWE when he entered his feud with Cena. While he was impressive leading into the matches, people say it was John who always came out looking better. Using that as an obstacle, they say Wyatt never recovered. In a sense that happened, but I think the injury factor and lack of direction hurt him more.

Perception says no one has elevated their stock when feuding with Cena, but I disagree. CM Punk beat Cena numerous times and even though he lost 2 of the 3 matches against him, Kevin Owen came out looking like a star. Owens has been involved in many major storylines since that feud and based on his wrestling ability, amazing quickness for a big man, and his intense desire to make himself stand out in his matches he will always be a star.

The thing is, AJ Styles is already over with the fans and continues to be a top tier talent. The only thing that may hinder his status is his affiliation with The Club, which could make it look like AJ will try to beat Cena with outside help, rather than wanting to do it on his own like he did with Roman Reigns.

AJ Styles has come out looking like a stud with his matches against Reigns, even though he was defeated both times. If you breakdown both matches completely, AJ may have been the only guy to make Roman a watchable commodity. Some say the important next step for AJ Styles is to show that he can be a star in the ring with John Cena. Why? Is John Cena a technical wrestling monster?

In my opinion, not only will AJ Styles be the star of this feud, but he will make Cena look better in the process. With AJ being the unfortunate beneficiary of the two losses to Roman Reigns, I think he will be on the other side of the bell this time around leading John Cena to be entrenched into his first losing battle.

People sometimes forget that AJ Styles is a great storyteller in the ring, and John Cena works best against great wrestlers. Make no mistake about it, this will be an amazing series of matches that will take us through the summer and set up another amazing storyline between Styles and Rollins. Hold on wrestling fans, business just picked up and we haven’t even touched on the brand split yet!
